Backcountry Insurance ???

Recently our 182 Insurance came up for renewal -Hull and Liability. Rates are slightly lower for company who has "land on pavement" clause not going that way . What do the 182/180 crowd use to be protected in the backcountry-don't mind paying a little more for right protection. Presently insured for 60K for about 800 bucks a year -like to stay around that number? Inquiring minds want to know .Thanks

Re: Backcountry Insurance ???

I go through the AOPA insurance.

I'm covered at all charted strips (paved, grass, dirt, gravel). I tripled made sure I was covered and asked about every kind of mishap at all these differant strips that I can think of (especially the backcountry) and there final answer was, "yes Pat, you are covered at all the strips you talked about".

I have mine at $60k also and pay around $1k a year (I'm still a low time pilot).

Re: Backcountry Insurance ???

I am with Avemco and I specifically asked about off airport ops and it is not a problem.

I had AVEMCO years back and they pissed me off when they closed the office in Van Nuys ,raised rates etc. Maybe I'll try them again?? If the strip is on the map no matter the kind of surface is good for me.

"If the strip is listed on a map".......... You guys are leaving out the other 50% of the strips, not to mention, the rest of the earth that you might like to land at.

Go to your favorite insurance dealer and ask him/her to get you a quote from Global.

No exclusions, good rates, and a pleasure to work with ( hope you don't have to, but good to have).

Just checked my file drawer. I'm with Global (through AOPA), too. And yes, very friendly to deal with!

Good point! But for now I'm sticking with charted strips till I get more time and experiance under my belt (I'm still a newbie/low time pilot).

Re: Backcountry Insurance ???

I have had at least one policy in the past (for my 170) with an "off airport exclusion" clause. Reading it,& talking to the broker, I figured I was not covered unless the strip was an FAA-recognized (though not necesarily charted) airstrip. Sorry I don't remember the underwriter, but I think it was through Travers or the old AIG broker that Travers took over from. My current policy through AOPA for my C-150/150TD has no such clause. Don't recall the underwriter now either, sorry.
It makes sense to check your policy fine print and/or talk to your broker if you wanna be sure you're covered no matter what. The exclusion clause said I was not covered landing at other than a maintained airport except in the case of a *declared* emergency. So if you ball your airplane up landing where you shouldn't have, don't expect the old "carb ice" excuse to necesarily save you.

To my knowledge there is not a current underwriter using Old Dominion paper. I would bet that Old Dominion is your agent. Phoenix uses Old Republic paper and has been known to add an off airport exclusion on select policies. Even a off airport exclusion does not exclude grass strips

Take a gander at the article on page 16 "Off the Beaten Path" that discusses some of these issues: http://www.airmmagazine.com/airm/2008/AIRMsummer_08.pdf

Be careful with that statement Tom...even though Global is easy to work with they still have some potentially problematic exclusions such as landing on water when equipped with floats or landing on snow/ice when equipped with skiis.

London Aviation has a standard exlusion that reads: "This policy does not apply under any coverage...when attempting to take off from a place which does not meet the minimum requirements set out in the pilots operating handbook and/or FAA approved aircraft flight manual for the aircraft involved."

If you have a policy with London (North American Specialty) and you use backcountry strips you better be careful.

Agreed. I have insured my bird on floats w/ US Specialty in the past and have looked at Avemco. Is Avemco part of US Specialty or visa versa?

Both and neither

They are both sort of subsidiaries of the same company: Houtson Casualty Company Insurance Holdings. While they are competitors they are also sort of sister companies with each one having their own books, underwriting guidelines, rates, and claims process. Neither one really has anything to do with the other short of sharing the same parent company.

Re: Backcountry Insurance ???

I just switched from AIG to Global this year. Rates were a little better but they have ski and float exclusions  I specifically asked about off airport and they said I was covered. They did say that my home airport had to be paved.

Re: Backcountry Insurance ???

So far, I've found it hard to beat AVEMCO. No off airport exclusions. May not be the best prices for floats. No exclusions or additional fees for skis.

Re: Backcountry Insurance ???

We had an off-airport claim with London back in '02, didn't have any problems collecting for it. Not sure what was excluded or included, but it was a part 91 lodge support policy in AK. We were paying $14K annually for it with $70K hull on a C180. They were good people to deal with.

Now have Avemco, $70K hull on an old 206, $3200 annually, private use.
