Backcountry Lodges with strips or water landings. BC & AK

Hello; I'm new to the Forum, fly a Husky on Amphibs and we are planning some trips this summer to British Columbia and Alaska. Does anyone know of a list of Lodges out in the bush for these two areas. a web site or anything will be most appreciated. Baja Montanan

Check out "public use" cabins in AK. There are two around Homer that you could fly into. China Poot Lake (Leisure lake) and Tutka bay in Kachemak state park. These things are $60 per night sleep six or eight and are wonderfully well kept. You need to bring your own food though.

On your way through BC:
http://www.nwseaplanes.com/fly-in-fishing-lodges/

These destinations also have a float plane dock available for tie up.

Here is the list from Kenmore Air. We stopped in at Blind Channel on our way through. Great dinner at the restaurant. Nice cabin available for rent on occasion.

Rivers Inlet has a dirt/gravel strip, but might just consider tie up on the lake side of the resort?

Shearwater has a dirt strip on the marina side, but the paved runway is on the town side away from the resort. Regular launch service is available across the channel between the two.

Land at McCarthy, AK (PAMX) and call the lodge for pickup at the airport.

We spent a couple of days there last June and will go back. It's worth a visit.

Does this place have a dirt runway or do you have to have floats for summer access? Their website mentions an airstrip but it is under the "winter" tab. Frozen runway?

Re: Backcountry Lodges with strips or water landings. BC &

Lots of lodges in the interior of BC that have airstrips or float plane docks. Nimpo Lake has lodges and fuel. Moose Lake lodge is very good but no fuel. Many of the more remote BC lodges won't have fuel...it's just to hard to get it into the places so they usually just have enough for their own use.

The list of places to go in BC really depends on your planned route. I'd be happy to point ya in the right direction once ya have a route planned.

Actually the airstrip is 15Z. It is about 3,400 feet long and four miles from Kennicott. I was up at Kennicott just two days ago -- three feet of snow but beautiful.

I have a buddy who has some cabins on Tagish Lake west of Atlin, BC. Not really a "lodge" experience, but a beautiful spot to rent a cabin for a day or two. He has a dirt strip, but it would be pretty rough on amphibs. If this ends up on your route and you're interested, send me a PM and I'll put you in touch. There is fuel available at Atlin (on land, not on the water) and a good strip there. Fuel is generally much cheaper than Whitehorse (most anyplace is cheaper than WH for fuel!).

Looks like either of those identifiers will work... same place. And it is pretty spectacular. How did you get up there, snow machine?

I would like to go back in May but the lodge isn't open then. I still might migrate up there after the Valdez STOL weekend if the weather is nice.

Floats or 4000' turf gravel runway. Great place, scenic and wonderful meals and great people. Run by a family. Surrounded by National Park in BC, SW of Williams Lake..

We go as often as we can. They are having a couples weekend anytime from Thurs., July 31 to Tues., August 5 with special rates. We'll be there during that time.

Generally true on the identifier except some of the airport search engines identify the old airstrip just to the south of McCarthy as PAMX, but I did note that Foreflight did not recognize 15z -- go figure.

Snowmachine -- and it is the glorious time of the year. I think the lodge doesn't open until around May 24th and snow will be gone by then.

Thanks for the info John! I've been eyeing that place as a stop on our AK trip this summer. Sounds like a keeper.

Agreed on Kennicot if you are looking for full boat lodge facilities.

At the top of the Trench is Scoop Lake. This place is so magnificent that it's almost a shame to put it up on the www.... The saving Grace is that the reputation of 'the Trench' keeps the traffic to a minimum.

+2 for Scoop Lake, they put your airplane in the corral to keep the horses (75) away! South of Watson Lake.
