Basic Medical.

I did my last 3rd class medical in August of 2016. With basic medical do I have to carry that medical card.

Re: Basic Medical.

Your old card, no. But this...

From AOPA:

"At least once every four years (48 months), you’ll need to visit a state-licensed physician. At the visit, you’ll need to provide your physician with an FAA-generated checklist, and your physician will need to affirm that he or she has performed an examination and discussed all the items on the checklist, including medications, with you. Your physician will have to affirm that he or she is unaware of any medical conditions that, as presently treated, could interfere with your ability to safely operate an aircraft. You will then need to retain the completed checklist with your logbook or in an accurate and legible electronic format. You would only provide it to the FAA if requested, such as during a routine ramp check, an investigation, or enforcement action."

Re: Basic Medical.

As a pilot is not required to keep his logbooks with him, I keep my Basic Med paperwork at home in my gun safe.

FWIW look yourself up here on FAA's airman database.

https://amsrvs.registry.faa.gov/airmeninquiry/

I think you will find that it shows the date of your most recent medical certificate and Basic Med compliance.
Mine shows this:

Medical Information:
Medical Class: Third  Medical Date: 5/2015
MUST WEAR CORRECTIVE LENSES.
BasicMed Course Date:  5/24/2017   BasicMed CMEC Date:  5/23/2017

Re: Basic Medical.

That's a good question. I'd presume it's licensed to operate in the state that he or she practices in. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised if there was a bizarre restriction.

I'm going to attempt Basic Med this time around, although I can pass a Third Class exam. Should be interesting.

I'll go for it when Canada says they'll honor it for private ops. Flying into/through BC is just too valuable.

Yes, you have a good point. In your area of the country, not being able to fly into BC would be a crying shame!

Copa and Aopa are working on that now. Hopefully we will see some good results soon.

Nope. I had mine done by a physician friend in Minnesota, but I live in Montana.

What I really wish is that TC would adopt this same type of medical for us. But in reading COPA, it seems both TC and COPA see no benefit. Too bad really...

I'm doing BasicMed today.

I don't know why Canada won't honor it. I mean every country has DIFFERENT requirements for driving, yet those people can drive in Canada.

If I decide to fly into Canada I can go to my aviation doc and get a class 3. Come to think of it. When I have flown into Canada they have never checked me. Just a phone call and they say have fun, now go spend all your money.

Cheers...Rob

Re: Basic Medical.

Quick Question for all you experts-

I have a class II medical I received in 03/2017. I do not need a class II since I do not exerciser commercial privileges.

Is my class II now good for 48 months if I just use it for my private privileges? Or do I need to get my "Basic Medical" completed in 03/2019? BTW- I am 57 y/o.

Thanks - Dave

Far as I know, your 2nd class is good for a year.
It then reverts to a third class which is good for another year (total of 2 years).I believe that a 3rd class is good for more (3 years) for the young guys (under 40?).
BasicMed exam is good for 4 years (with initial online quiz, and another at the 2 year mark).
A 1st, 2nd, or 3rd class medical does NOT revert to a BasicMed,
BasicMed is a whole separate deal and requires it's own exam.

Re: Basic Medical.

Since we are talking about Basic Med let me throw this out there. I did the Basic Med last year on May 1 st. My hangar neighbor knows that I went Basic Med so he was asking who I used. I told him, so he contacted the doctors office in Traverse City, MI who did mine but they are no longer doing them and actually only did two before they stopped. He had a list of six doctors which he down loaded from the AOPA site but none of them is currently doing the Basic Medical physical. So my question is, has anyone in Michigan recently (last few months) completed a physical for a Basic Med, and if so would you be willing to share the doctors name so I can help him out? We are located in the Cadillac area but he is willing to travel if needed. Thank you,

Tim

ps: It seems like AOPA dropped the ball by not finding a way to inform and train doctors in the Basic Medical process.

The whole process was super easy. I did the AOPA study guide. That took 1.5 hours and the quiz took another 30 minutes. I did this over two evenings. You are suppose to do the study guide and quiz every two years. Doctor visit every 4 years. Regardless of FAA rules I go to the doctors every year for type 2 diabetes. I hope Canada gets on board with BasicMed.

I don't know what's up with your docs back there. The paper work the doc has to do is standard BS. Name, address, license number, and date of exam. Basically like a CDL physical or high school sports.
