Beach landings

Saw this today:

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/south-carolina/articles/2018-04-08/faa-plane-lands-on-south-carolina-beach-to-take-pictures

So, while the history of aviation allowed aircraft to land anywhere they wanted to as long as no one was endangered (and is still that way in some parts of the country), it is now perceived by some to be an act worthy of prosecution. BTW, the video embedded in the story line is a separate incident, but the witness interview reveals just how little the average citizen understands about aviation.

Re: Beach landings

I was really surprised to see so many people in the picture then I realized those beaches are pretty densely packed. If illegal, I'd guess that was the reason why.

Up here I wouldn't think of landing on a beach with people on it because the whole point of flying (for me) is avoiding people and there are lots of nice beaches to land and be the only one there.

Re: Beach landings

Oregon has dozens of miles of beaches which are deserted, but it's illegal to land there. They are very specific about that...unless designated an airport, Oregon beaches are closed to airplanes, period.

I can only guess it's a futile attempt to limit the transportation of their most popular agricultural export. A goal which would seem completely pointless and without any merit at this point in the game.

Re: Beach landings

You can't drive a car or cast a rod on an East coast beach without a displayed permit, let alone land an airplane :(

ADS-B is going to solve the 'who dunnit' problem tho. Can't wait until they write programs to back scan collected data and start violating people =D>

By the power vested in me by BCP I here by designate this beach as an airport. Um, I think this was Canada, or was it Alaska. :?

It seemed unclear to me whether the "reporter" just assumed the pilot needed catching by the police, or if the police were actually in catch mode. The way it's written, the police maybe could have cared less. The police I have come in contact with over the years while doing aviation, all seemed to be aware that they were out of their league or comfort zone legally when it came to dealing with me and my plane. All had a good sense of humor, one jokingly asking to see my drivers license and proof of insurance, which I jokingly didn't give him. One even provided me with a gallon of gas. If I was on a off airport site, and I happened to see a LEO car coming my way, I doubt I would bother to take off before they got there, unless I was leaving anyway. I'd not act guilty of anything in other words. I would assume they thought I was in need of assistance, not trying to bust me.

Re: Beach landings

The video BigRenna posted indicates the beach was empty and void of people with the exception of the plane and the police SUV. It looked to me that the tide was out as the cell phone video was taken several hundred yards from where the plane landed. Since it wasn't an emergency landing, I'm sure the pilot assumed the arrival of the police was simply to see if all was well. :^o If he is smart, that picture will never surface anywhere on social media, because you can bet they are looking for it.

Re: Beach landings

There is still more unpopulated space than populated space in the world. I have had to deal with people a bit after precautionary or forced landings and would have preferred unpopulated. It helps if the airplane stinks of parathion.

We have some nice quiet beaches in Canada. This is one of the busier ones.

I didn';t like the spin they put on that--
automatically the pilot s guilty of something and trying to get away.

Just the good ol' boys
Never meanin' no harm
Beats all you never saw
Been in trouble with the law
Since the day they was born
Staightenin' the curves
Flattenin' the hills
Someday the mountain might get 'em
But the law never will
Makin' their way
The only way they know how
That's just a little bit more
Than the law will allow
Makin' their way
The only way they know how yeah
That's just a little bit more
Than the law will allow

Re: Beach landings

I guess taking pictures at the beach is another thing to add to the list of things that will get you unwanted attention. Leave the camera in the baggage compartment next time.

Looks a lot like Vargas, but I can't see the massive fog bank sitting just off shore!

I love that place. Last June we had lunch there then flew down the coast to Victoria. One of my favourite destinations. Along with Princess Louisa Inlet, Texada, Courtney, Sechelt...

Re: Beach landings

We're fortunate that a stretch of beach in Washington State is a designated runway. S16 is Copalis Beach State Airport. Just be sure to wash the sand and salt off your plane afterwards!
