Belly pod (Alaska Skycraft) installation on Cessna 180

Troy supplied this great article a while back and I don't believe I posted it in the forum.

While the belly pods are no longer available, it should serve as an information piece that's useful for others planning an installation.

I wonder why Aerocet haven’t carried on with these pod’s after buying the STC. It seems like they would be big sellers. Its always annoying when someone buys an STC then shuts it down.

Yes I have been wanting the fuel/cargo pod for over a decade now. Last I checked they were not going to make any. If anyone has one for sale let me know.

Another user her PM'd me to comment that they had called Aerocet less than a year ago inquiring about a belly pod and were told they could indeed make them one.

Never hurts to call, and probably talk to the correct person there.

Re: Belly pod (Alaska Skycraft) installation on Cessna 180

I emailed Aerocet. They will make a standard pod to order (not the fuel pod) for $10,500 + $750 freight. He didn't know why it wasn't shown as available on their website. I replied asking why the cargo/fuel pod was not an option and that I thought it might be popular if offered. His reply. “I don’t know why the fuel/cargo model has not been made available, other than design and engineering has been working on larger projects”. If some pressure was bought to bear it feels like they might get onto it. It would be expensive though considering what they are charging for the standard pod.

I called Aerocet about 2 years ago, inquiring about the fuel belly pod for my '55 180. I was told they _could_ make them as well - but we waaay too busy with the back log of floats and so they wouldn't take an order. I told them to hire more people. I don't think they are going to listen to me (us). I sure wish they would. Or Tony would retire from flying and stacking paper from all those inspection kits and make a pod for the early 180. Haha. A guy can dream.

Thank you, not bad for a working girl! They are 31" ABW's. They are off our PA-18A, which has been on floats for the past few years, so I just had to try them on the 180 since they were sitting unemployed.

Update SOLD.

I see this post is a couple years old but if anyone is interested I have one of these Aerocet belly pods (no fuel) that came off of a 73 180J, that I would be willing to sell. It is in great condition.

Text or call 801-755-8334 for pics or more info. -David
