I got a new Go Pro so I could get some video for my website. It is awesome, remote control, HD quality, take stills, slow motion and a water proof case up to 60 feet......but it doesn't float....

I was untying the beaver for a trip up to Lake Hood. I, of course, zipped up my right vest pocket, the one with my phone in it (I am not a rookie), bent down and heard a "bloop". My immediate thought was "what was that? I zipped up my phone pocket......oh sh!t!" I didn't zip up my $400 GoPro pocket (not a rookie, just don't learn too fast)

Beluga Lake is the owner of many a phone, set of keys, wrenches etc because, although it is not deep, the bottom is weeds, and visibility is zero. But I called my buddy on the fire department with scuba gear anyway, and asked him if he would give it a try. He spent forty five minutes searching by feel only and came up with a hockey puck...and my camera! I gave him a $100 which I will rack up to an idiot tax.

I haven't used that word since 10th grade, and no, I couldn't spell it without looking it up.

When I was in high school, we took a family vacation out to Catalina Island one summer on my uncle's 30 ft sailboat, and moored in Avalon harbor. My brother and I spent hours snorkeling under the waterfront restaurants finding treasures like Serengeti sunglasses (big score, my dad wore them for years after) and rusty pocket knives.

Below the seaplane docks in Alaska were treasures unlimited. We found everything from unicycles to ammunition from WWII to a porcelain commode off an old cruise ship.
Glad the camera was found. It can be a challenge to see stuff. Had to chase an expensive roll of wire for a fisherman once. Took over an hour. Then you stop and think.... Hey, don't the sailboats in the harbor discharge the head overboard. Oh shit, took the fun right outta that dive.

Upon entering Avalon harbor, the harbormaster would board your boat and put a special dye in your head. If you discharged it in the harbor, it was extremely obvious you got a big ticket.

"Clunk, Splash" are two sounds that no seaplane pilot wants to hear.....and most have. I lost an old 121.5 PLB that way in the Yukon River one day.....wasn't even any point in thinking about it.....

One Saturday evening, I returned to Lilly Lake, the municipal float pond in Kodiak in our Super Cub. It was a little windy, and as I came up to the dock, I had to hustle to get control of things. As I jumped out of the plane, the familiar "Clunk, Splash" sounded, as my government issued law enforcement handgun went for a swim......damn lousy shoulder holster.....

Water at our dock was only six or so feet deep, so I went home that evening, and Sunday morning early, I proceeded to Lilly Lake with my snorkeling gear. Got wet and after fifteen minutes of feeling around in the sludge on the bottom of the pond, lo and behold....I found the gun!! Took the gun home and dismanteled it, cleaned it and oiled it well when dry. No worries.

Monday morning, I grabbed the local newspaper and on the front page was the headline: "Lilly Lake Condos Have Been Discharging Raw Sewage Directly Into Lilly Lake for Nearly a Year"......

The Condos were right across the approximately 150 foot wide pond from our dock.....

I immediately took a LOOONNNNGGG shower, and checked on my tetanus shot dates.

The REAL conundrum would have been had I had the sewage news BEFORE I dropped the gun.

I dropped some good sunglasses into the drink at Friday Harbor in the San Juan islands up in Washington State. I immediately dove in after them. That water is so cold it took my breath away, and removed any chance of focusing in the sunglasses. I was a shivering mess when I got out, and the sunglasses still got away. They had prescription lenses, so they won't do anybody else any good even if a diver finds them. Sigh. Now I look like some kind of magician ready to do a rope trick I have so many strings tying important things to me when I'm around the water.

Ha! Nice catch! I hadn't noticed that.

To be fair, he did remove the "Actual footage" tag during that clip. A little artistic license I suppose.
