Brainstorming the Future of the Utah Backcountry Pilots Assn

Good Afternoon!

The Utah Backcountry Pilots Association has its roots founded in the late 1990's by a group of backcountry pilots wondering how they could help preserve the many airstrips found in Utah. Since then, through many runway work gatherings, meetings with the BLM and various other organizations, and continuing in the spirit of being ambassadors to backcountry aviation, the UBCP has maintained a solid track record of preserving and reviving some of the great places in Utah reachable only by airplane.

Times have changed since we were formed, and as we continue in our goals of Preserving Airstrips, Enhancing Safety, and Preserving the Environment, we're looking for ways to better accomplish our mission, while providing our members the resources necessary to not only enjoy the backcountry safely, but to help maintain and enhance it.

That's why we're looking for a few good men and women who have some ideas as to how we can increase the success in our mission. From a new website, to more communications from our Board of Directors, more fly-ins and other social events, and the many other ideas you may have...we'd love to hear from you!

Saturday, November 25th, at 12:00, the UBCP will be hosting an informal get-together at the Skypark Airport FBO (KBTF), where we'd love to brainstorm the future of the UBCP, and how we can make this happen together. If you're willing and able to make this event, please let us know by emailing utahbackcountrypilots at gmail.com or calling/texting 928-710-2615. Lunch will be provided.

On behalf of the UBCP, we would like to thank you for your continued support, and look forward to an exciting future of the Utah Backcountry.

Re: Brainstorming the Future of the Utah Backcountry Pilots

Personally, I’m happy to see this post. The UBCP association has done a lot of good work over the years with some really good people involved. But a weak area seems to be the lack of being publicized or being a known entity in Utah Aviation. It’s always seemed low key. I think the website, while a good resource, is often stale and not very active. As such, I don’t think it gets a lot of traffic. I would love to see UBCP become more mainstream and a known player in the Utah aviation community.

Thanks for posting and I’ll attend if I can!

Grassstrip:

Your point is a good one. The same thing has happened here in NM too. A lot of good people are getting a lot done, but we don't do a very good job of letting the flying community know. I suspect that some of that is a generational issue. You millennials are a whole lot more plugged into and more adept at social media and communications in the internet age! We all need to do a better job of communicating our successes.

Perhaps there is a UT member like yourself that could help with that facet of Utah's efforts!!

P.S. Can't think you enough for putting up the story this year on your trip to AK. Lot of great memories of camping with my kids came flooding back. Keep up the good work!!!

PA11:

A good example of GS's point is the NMAN (New Mexico Airstrip Network) that was formed and has had great successes here in NM. The NMAN was copied after the Idaho Airstrip Network and is a consortium between many organizations including US Forest Service, BLM, New Mexico Aviation Department, New Mexico Tourism Department, AOPA, RAF, New Mexico Pilot's Association, New Mexico Airport Manager's Association, etc... Late last year, we developed a Memorandum of Understanding between the participating parties. That MOU, along with the national MOU that the RAF had established with the FS and BLM, has led us to doing some exciting projects with the Forest Service and BLM here in NM.

To GS's point, it has also led to some good articles in local news outlets that helped highlight NMAN's goals and objectives.

If you are interested in hearing more about it, please send a PM and I will forward the contact info where you can get more info.

The RAF was really helpful in this process and I believe they may have also highlighted the effort in one of their regional meetings held this year.

PA-11, tell your members well done. I have had the opportunity to enjoy some of your strips and have had a few conversations with your folks of the last few years. Their hard work is shining through!!.

Me too. That's why we're making this happen! If you can't make it, feel free to call/text/email/post to the UBCP Facebook page and I'll make sure your thought and ideas are shared with the group!

Hey! Who are you calling a millennial?! Them’s are fighting words! [emoji12]

Congratulations on all of your success! I often hear about the Colorado pilots Association, the Arizona pilots Association, and of course the accomplishments of those in Idaho. It would be great to have an organization in Utah that is a main player like that as well.

Thank you for the kind words regarding the Alaska trip. It was a trip of a lifetime! Recently I’ve been working on an article for this website and it’s been awesome going back and reliving the memories. I really want to go again! Maybe version 2.0 this summer?

The UBCP is in the process of brainstorming new ideas. Right now, we want people to continue to use the utahbackcountrypilots.org website and we'll talk about what our future website needs at the meeting on the 25th. Also, if you are facebook-kind of people, we created our official page at @utahbackcountrypilots
