Bull Run is in great shape! Brightly painted stacks of white rocks mark the strip and a bright streamer is hung on a post to judge the wind. Many thanks to those who have kept it in such good shape.

"Bull Run" Airstrip, Deschutes River Oregon

Didn't it take quite a beating in the fires last summer? Thanks for the pics.

FYI, I split your post to its own new topic. I think seeing the "closure" thread from 2010 bumped may be confusing for some, when this is really a "check this out" type of post. 8)

Re: Bull Run airstrip, Deschutes River, OR

Thanks for the new thread, I didn't know if it warranted a new thread or not. The shrubbery is all scorched but the groundcover is nice and green as it is spring down at that low elevation. It was 60 degrees down there at 7pm and the bugs are already out! Didn't have my fly rod or the time to test the fishing...

Excellent PIREP. Where is it on the sectional chart? Lat/Long?

Thank you. :D

Should be on shortfield.com, fly 5 minutes or so south of the Columbia River following the Deschutes and you’ll find it.

Re: Bull Run airstrip, Deschutes River, OR

Looks interesting. Pretty close to me.

Except for the skeletons does it look Trigear friendly?

I would do it with 8.00s. Nothing smaller. IMO

I appreciate that.

Will cross it off my 'To Do' list.

Re: Bull Run airstrip, Deschutes River, OR

I was surprised with how smooth it was. I'm on the smooth 8.50 Dessers and it is one of the smoother airstrips I frequent. I would say it is trigear friendly with the right operator.

Re: Bull Run airstrip, Deschutes River, OR

The strip is relatively narrow, with a turn necessary shortly after touchdown when landing upstream. There are large rock piles marking either side of the runway that will wreak major havoc on any size tire if you drift too far from center. The rock piles are often obscured by the grasses. It's actually pretty smooth on the airstrip though. The green is returning after a recent fire that scorched the entire canyon from bank to bank. There has been a Mooney in there, but I would definitely classify it as a backcountry strip that requires precise flying.

Re: Bull Run airstrip, Deschutes River, OR

Please be aware, this airstrip is located on BLM managed land within the Lower Deschutes Wild and Scenic River corridor. The River Management Plan approved in 1993 specifically prohibits aircraft landings at this airstrip, or anywhere within the Wild and Scenic River Corridor, which extends from the Columbia River to river mile 100, just above Warm Springs.

I have had several discussions with the BLM to try and remove this prohibition, but without success. It likely will not happen until a future revision of the RMP.

I am not aware of any enforcement actions, but anyone using the airstrip should recognize that possibility. The restriction can be enforced by Federal, State or Tribal authorities.

If you use the airstrip, leaving it tidier than you found it certainly does help our cause. Have fun and be safe!

Looks like a cool place to check out. I can only see a problem if for some reason something went wrong and you needed assistance. Law enforcement might get involved and I am not sure what legal consequences or civil penalties one would face. Of course there is always carb ice as a great excuse for mechanical problems needing a useful strip in the area. :)

Never know when some carb ice will force a landing only to leave a plane with no mechanical issues ssn's good for a departure again. It's the darndest thing

I cleaned up my post. I apologize to to any lib tree huggers who's feelings I hurt.

It must be the freedom loving ranchers from the wild areas of Oregon east of the Cascade Mountains. The Willamette Valley big cities were wrongly branded by me. I am sincerely sorry. :^o :^o [-o<
