C-140 Questions
Technical and practical discussion about specific aircraft types such as Cessna 180, Maule M7, et al. Please read and search carefully before posting, as many popular topics have already been discussed.
Post more movies! I'm really enjoying them.
I'm surprise at the tiny pitch change needed to slow the decent for nice, soft looking 3 pointer.

Nice landing, Rob! That thing is definitely a hot rod.
I talked with Glen Geller the other night and he asked who bought my plane. I told him and he assured me that "it's in good hands."

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
Thanks Zane

robw56,
Thanks VERY much for the great videos. If I'm not being too personal, how many hours have you flown, and how many have you flown in the 120?
I am looking at a similarly engined 140 for use on an 1,100 foot grass strip with minimal obstacles. I am, however, a low time pilot and will have to get comfortable with the plane before going into the grass strip. I solo'd in an Aeronca Champ before finishing up in a 150 so I'm not completely ignorant of dealing with a tail dragger, but have never been on anything except a wide, paved runway.
Thanks for your comments and the great videos.

I have about 550 hours and 400+ of that was in the 120. Most of that was before I even graduated highshool. I haven't flown much the last 7 years I've been in the Air Force until I bought Zane's 170B back in October. If you get the 140 Im sure you will love it. I've flow a 135hp 140 with VGs and 8.50s. It was a very fun plane too, the flaps and VGs made it fly slower than the 120 on final, with 2 aboard I was approaching at 45mph indicated with no problem. Just go out and practice a lot and that 1100 foot grass strip will be a piece of cake.

Rob,
Thanks very much for your reply and thanks for your service. I spent three years in the Army back in 68 to 71. Did you fly in the Air Force?
How many hours of flying your 120 before you would have felt comfortable landing on the strip in your first video?

I'm not a pilot for the AF but I am a crew member on C-130s, a Loadmaster. I think I had at least 150 hours in the 120 in a pretty short amount of time before I went into that strip. I practiced a lot at another grass runway that was about a mile from there, I shot countless landings there trying to get it down and stopped in the first 500 feet or so of usable runway. Once I was proficent at that I would fly into the short strip every once in a while when conditions were right.

There's a C-140 on Barnstormers right now with 115hp. I want sooooo badly. But I still have to wait my year before I'm allowed to buy.

You dont want that one!

There is so much weight in that panel you will have no room for beer.

Yes, I think I know the 140 that you're talking about. I've been lusting over it since yesterday. It has much more panel than I need, but it's a beautiful plane. I think it would be ideal for my upcoming short field.
Rob56,
I flew as a passenger on C130's all over Western Europe. I played baseball in the Army Special Services one Summer and traveled all over for games. About my second flight on one, the Crew Chief was a guy that lived down the street from me in civilian life. He showed me how to rig a cot in the back of the plane. After that I spent a good bit of time on one of those cots. I got to a point where I could sleep in spite of the common, ongoing engine warble.
Years after that, I had a job where I ended up taking last minute commercial flights and often ended up in the back row of an MD80 between the engines. It was the same warble and it took my mind back to the days of riding in the C130. I remember thinking that at least I drew a paycheck to ride on the C130, but I have to pay money for the same punishment on the MD80 or DC9.
BTW, I remembered the C130 as being called the Hercules. Is yours a different version or something.

Doc,
I understand that he WAS the Loadmaster...it's a job in the AF. Yep, still called the Herc'. I have also spent many hours aboard the mighty Herc', most of those when assigned to AF Special Operations at Hurlburt Field, Fl. Longest flight was a trip to Panama geared-up and loaded with more men then the plane had seats for. I have a soft spot for the plane. Lost my Brother-in-law aboard a C-130 "Spectre", Spirit 23. Shot down over Kahfji During Desert Storm. Rest in Peace Capt Arthur Galvin and all the other aboard this mighty flying gunship.

WW,
Thanks for the clarification. I didn't pick up on the Loadmaster term. I guess that's what I get from spending my Military time as a baseball player and a Missile and Radar Repairman. I ended up ignorant of aircraft crew terms.
I offer my best thoughts for your Brother in Law.

I guess they'll just keep flying the C 130 forever, like the B52.
