Perhaps PPONK themselves can recommend a shop that they have worked with, since they sell more gearbox parts than anyone?
Already checked they don't but they referred me to an outside shop, I chased that one. Pponk seems to want to focus on the engine mods. Thanks Bill

Re: C-180 Gear Box repair

Just an update, I decided on Beegles in Greeley and flew de plane over on Friday dropped it off met up with the staff and worker bees. I chased alot of shop leads and decided on Beegles because the answer to my question of can/have you replaced the outer mount brackets was answered with yes we have we do them all the time vs no but we can do it and the estimate was the same.

They quoted me a specific time and a specific way to do the repair whereas all the other shops indicated they would be learning at my expense. I'm supplying the parts and sourcing them from Pponk. I'll give an update as it comes down.

Thanks for the update Russ. Let us know how it goes. How long are they expecting they will have it? Just trying to get a sense for how long the modification should take.

They said about 60 hrs The one thing I'm a little apprehensive about now is I was told about 3 weeks ago is to give them a couple weeks to clear out some work before I bring it. So I lined up some flights with AA free miles and my return was yesterday. I'm planning on going back (from So Cal) Aug 1 and pick it up on the 2nd.

I made it clear I didn't want this to be their year end project and was told they could get it done in that time frame. Friday when there I got the feeling they wont start till next week, their shop is stuffed to the gills with a/c. I've had the wing for my glider in my hanger needing some easy work to be done for the second year now, it'll probably get done now :D

Re: C-180 Gear Box repair

I think you'll be pleased with Beegles. It's been in business a long time, and Ray Burnham, the current owner (only the 2nd owner) is a straight shooter, as are those who work for him. Ray has owned the business for almost 35 years.

The first airplane I saw that had been repaired by Beegles was many years ago, sometime in the late 70s, which was a 206P which had been rolled up in a ball in Cheyenne by a 65 knot wind that turned it head over teakettle. When I saw it, it looked like it was fresh out of the factory. Since then, because my hangar is right next to the Beegles facility, I've seen many of their projects.

Last week I took a tour of the main Beegles shop, courtesy Scott Mauch, one of their long time employees who does quite a bit of their estimate work. Very impressive.

Disclaimer: I have no interest in the company, at all, other than its a neighbor on the same airfield.

Just saw this Russ- it would be worth while to call Herb at Nervino. I could fly you back to Riverside. He is good and fairly timely.

You have my number if your intersted.

If it were me, I'ld fly into Yellowstone Regional in Cody, WY. It's a great airport and nice town. I'm sure they have rental cars as I believe many pilots do as you're planning.

Did Beegles find anything more or was it limited to the outboard brackets?

Have fun,

Marty

Just a note, EZ mentioned Delair. Harry Delliker died in early July. Not sure of the status of the shop.

I agree with Cody, they have one of the best museums there at the Buffalo Bill Center. It houses the WInchester collection and other american fire arms along with native american displays, The whole museum is outstanding.

We will be flying into KCOD on Friday renting a car and staying in the park Friday and Saturday, I lucked out and got a room inside the park today wow this is kinda late I wanted to make sure Beegles was on track on the repair and calling them today. Scott at Beegles said they were starting to go back together and there was no additional problems found.

He also mentioned they found a bucking bar in the belly resting up against the trim chain #-o Ahhh ya I replaced the seat rails pilot side last annual ahhh can I have it back :?: :D Of course you can he said.

I've been waiting 60 years to see Jellystone :D

Wow... end of an era.

If you are near Porterville, can you PLEASE find a way to rescue that Taylorcraft that Harry was letting sink into the ground? I can have any number of my homeboys from the T-craft world come and take that airplane away and put it back in the air. If you can manage to put me in touch with whoever will be handling Harry's estate, I will find a way.

Hell, I will personally come and give Harry's widow or estate a tax write-off that puts more money in their pocket than if they sold it for cash.

Sorry for the thread creep.
