C-182 instrument panel plans

This last winter I moved things around and installed the EDM-830. We were installing the 0-470-50 so we thought it would be money well spent to install an engine monitor. It was fun to rework the panel. The garmin USB port is very handy.

I have been at home watching the kids the last few days, so I thought someone might enjoy this project.

I will make another post about my new plans.

Re: C-182 instrument panel plans

I want to start training for my IFR rating. So I have scheduled an appointment to have my avionics upgraded to garmin. Originally I was going to have the GNX375 with one GI275. But, by the time I actually put the money down it turned into replacing the 6 pack with two GI275's and the GNX375. At that point the shop told me I may want to consider adding a third GI275 for the 9 or so pages of multi function display, which sounded nice. Long story short, My current plan is to install the GNX375 which is a waas GPS, ads-b in and out, and transponder all in one. One G-5. and the 7" G3X touch. Picture of the goal below.

I plan to do a lot of cross country trips, and the GFC 500 is something I will probably do in the future when its certified for my plane.

Re: C-182 instrument panel plans

Looks like it’ll be a killer panel. I won’t comment on the NEED for a g3x (or even two 275’s), but airplanes are WANT things anyway so do what makes you happy. I haven’t used a G3x but I love the g500/600 for ifr platforms, so I imagine the G3X is similarly good.

Like you said, I’ve found panel work like rearranging and cleaning up to be enjoyable and gratifying.

Btw, I agree that USB ports are one of the most useful things. I love these specific ones:

I like those USB plugs as well Asa. But image found they won't charge an IPad running foreflight, and I also have gotten reports of occasional noise coming through the radio with them. It actually causes squelch on my comm every now and again in the 206. I just installed a EI USB 6A, with 5 charging ports in a 182. I think one will end up in the 206 soon.

Interesting. I tested both things (ipad and noise) because I was leery for the $25 price, but found they charged well and made no noise. Maybe the noise is dependent on proximity to sensitive components? Not sure what to say about the ipad though, it charged mine great the past year in the Scout. Haven't tried it since I installed in Maule.

Re: C-182 instrument panel plans

Ya im not sure. Sometimes it makes noise, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes unplugging my cord and plugging in makes the noise go away, sometimes it doesn't. But I do like the idea of having extra ports and the EI ones are decently priced.
I have not personally tried an Ipad, but I have 3 customers that run full size ones as well as stratus units, and they all have the same complaint about it not charging. Very very slow discharge.

Re: C-182 instrument panel plans

The charge rate is why I installed the GSB15. It seemed to have a higher 3.0A charge rate than the others. Reading around it seemed you needed the extra charge rate to keep up with an I-pad on a long flight. The price of the one you posted looks real nice though.

Your panel came out nice.
But it's my understanding that the 830 is not approved as a primary instrument.
So you still have the standard required engine gauges to remain legal?

You could just stop being the forum police and let him and his mechanic sign it out however they see fit. Especially seeing as you have also found ways around using certified parts in your panel...

Lighten up, dude-- my intent was not to "police" anyone, I'm just curious.
I'm interested in possibly doing the same sort of thing myself, but maybe with a JPI 350.

The JPI EDM 350 appeals to me as well, do you have any experience with it to report ?

Re: C-182 instrument panel plans

I will be taking the panel I made out in a few months and have been debating upgrading to the edm900 which jpi says has all the same wiring. If so I will be selling the 830 with new wiring. My panel could go with if anyone is interested. I have fuel flow, Oat. That will go with 830

In case you want the certified version for your certified plane.

Re: C-182 instrument panel plans

If you are going with 7” G3X and a separate engine monitor, I’d highly recommend going with the 10.6 in landscape with the Garmin engine monitor on the one screen. Roughly the same net cost, cleaner and simpler.

I guess you're talking about the pre-STC Garmin G5 I installed a few years ago.
This installation is in accordance with FAA policy statement PS-ACE-23-08,
and not one but two different inspectors at the local FSDO verified that (in writing) beforehand.
So I'd say I found a way to do it within the regulations -- not that I "found ways around" them.

And thats totally fine. Maybe he did the same with the 830. Your tone makes it seem like you know it all and noone can find their own ways. If you are wondering if he had it certified in a certain way then just ask that. Very simple really. Nonetheless to make sure he's following rules, again, thats up to him and his mechanic to figure out. Not someone on the net.
Have a good one.
BTW, panel looks great Barrakudaman.

Re: C-182 instrument panel plans

Getting close to having my plane back. I was able to build the panel myself. The avionics shop made it really easy since they had done a similar panel for a 180 recently. I was able to use there template and modify for my application. They also were able to line up all the lettering/placard info for engraving. I was originally going to do a half panel like before; but decided against it. I am super happy with how it looks. GFC500 hole is there below the stack and will have the control unit installed for now. The rest of the autopilot system will go in once its approved for my plane in a month or 6. NewView avionics in Oshkosh is the shop.
