C170 down near Auburn, CA

I get home - turn on the radio - and the first news I hear is a Cessna 170 went down near Auburn Calif.

Anybody know or hear more?

Wasn't mine that I, so far as I know.

Re: Radio News

Unfortunately:

AUBURN, CALIF. — Two people are dead after their small plane crashed near Auburn Municipal Airport late Saturday, authorities said.

The Cessna 170 crashed in a heavily wooded area about one mile south of the airport around 9:10 p.m. Saturday, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer.

The plane went down under "unknown circumstances," Kenitzer said. He did not know if the plane had just taken off or was on approach to the airport at the time of the crash.

Deputies began searching for the plane after getting a call from the California Office of Emergency Services about a possible plane crash.

After commercial airliners confirmed a distress signal from an aircraft's emergency locating transmitter, the wreckage of the plane was found about 1:45 a.m. by a California Highway Patrol helicopter and deputies on the ground using a handheld radio programmed with the distress signal information, Placer County officials said.

The two occupants of the plane were found dead. Their names have not been released.

Both the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

The airport near the scene of the crash is part of an industrial park in Auburn, a Sierra foothills community about 35 miles northeast of Sacramento.

At an elevation of 1,500 feet Auburn Municipal Airport is above the fog and usually clear year-round, according to its website. Weather at the time of the crash was clear and winds were calm, the National Weather Service said.

This is tragic...I believe I met them when they were here in Longmont last summer. Condolences to their families.

Re: C170 down near Auburn, CA

There is only one 170B registered in Susanville according to the FAA db. He is a BCP member and friends with many here. I hope by virtue of some error or technicality it is not him.

Thats his N# and I can't think of another 170 in the Susanville area. Top pilot, pristine plane, and good weather. Hope its another but either way its bad.
Thoughts and prayers. If no news by tomorrow, I'll call him.

Re: C170 down near Auburn, CA

Trucks in the hanger and plane is gone. Word in Susanville is no good...this is not a 100% confirmation however sources says its pretty much what we are thinking...Bruce and Kathy were down there for the weekend. Know one can get a hold of them. Both are very good at answering their phones. Both phones go straight to voicemail.

Both Bruce and Kathy were two of the nicest people you could meet. They owned hands down the nicest 170 I have ever seen. He was very proud of his Heritage trophy that he won. Many of you meet him here flying with us and or at Reno during the races.

Prayers

The head of the 170 Assn is reporting that it was Bruce and Kathy.

If true, tailwinds to both and prayers for their loved ones and friends.
