Re: C182 Cornfield Takeoff

Wrong from the get go. But towards the end, all the pilot had to to was push the nose down a little to gain more speed. [-X :?

Re: C182 Cornfield Takeoff

Whoops is right! Looks like he was doing alright keeping weight off the nose... Should have held it in ground effect for a little while... People die that way...

Re: C182 Cornfield Takeoff

Looks like a jump ship, evidenced by the step on the right main gear. Didn't know a Cessna wing would let go like that lightly loaded. He just needed to accelerate in ground effect for 50-100 feet and would have probably climbed right out. I can't imagine having a commercial rating and controlling the airplane that poorly.

And the person filming did not run to help the pilot out of the smoldering wreck.

Re: C182 Cornfield Takeoff

Agree with the acceleration in low ground effect, even if just to have control of which trees to put the nose between. When ten inches will do it, trying for ten feet over the trees can be very dangerous. Habit, going over high most times, can come back to bite us in tight situations.

Re: C182 Cornfield Takeoff

contactflying, i can't tell if he did not have airspeed or if he had to much AoA but any way he stalled and didn't even make it there to the trees

Re: C182 Cornfield Takeoff

It is so much easier to trade airspeed, gained in low ground effect on every takeoff, for altitude in a short zoom climb than to level the aircraft in high ground effect below tree height to prevent stall. Once in the high position and sucking air, it is too late for the free extra energy of low ground effect. Unfortunately PTS have called for the unfortunate takeoff demonstrated here. Fortunately the latest PTS call for acceleration in ground effect prior to pitch up to Vx or Vy as appropriate. Unfortunately they still do not call for acceleration in low ground effect until near the obstacle.

I was going to post my opinion but it's been covered... ground effect is your friend!

Cam Tom 12,
You sound like an overloaded Cobra driver. Going all the way to the Chup rubber plantation, way up the Mekong in Cambodia, we left Tay Ninh grossing 13,500. Six inch hover at max torque, think not push forward, touch down and slide on the PSP just before transional, transional, low ground effect flight to just short of the concertina, zoom over the concertina, level and continue acceleration in low ground effect. Forty five minutes of fuel burn later, you are over the Chup and ready to fight.
Best regards,
Apache 21

Been in similar situations in OH-58D's loaded heavy in Afghanistan!

We had some crews hitting NG overspeeds and mast overtorques just taxiing to parking after refuel.

Re: C182 Cornfield Takeoff

The D Model must be really beefed up to carry all that stuff. The OH-6A in Vietnam was so superior as a loach our guys, 1/9th, refused to trade when the Army brought the 58s over. I think the OH-6A had less than 400 shp. It was an Allison. I flew with White when I was down recuperating from my Cobra crash my first day in the AO. Got shot down with Bloody Bart while he was showing me where some bad guys were. We found them.

Re: C182 Cornfield Takeoff

That was hard to watch. I wonder if his seat rolled back, I didn't see much rudder wagging and he was yarding on the yoke for all it was worth. Looked a little short on flap too.
