Camping trip in the eastern US

Seven months ago I introduced myself and my flying dream on the "Lurkers - it's your time" - thread. A few days later I posted a question about which plane would fit my mission. And three weeks ago I took possession of a beautiful '55 170B, with all the mods I had dreamed about for my flying adventures.
More than one year of intensive search preceded this happy moment and in the end it was big help from Bigrenna and a string of miraculous coincidences which led me to my plane.
After almost 50 hrs of training and practicing in my bird I'm about to head out on my first adventure: a three week camping loop around the eastern part of the US. Starting in New England and then westbound perhaps as far as OH, Il or TN.
This being my first trip in this region I would appreciate any recommendations for places to visit - and perhaps what to avoid, as well.

Thanks in advance,
Wolf

Nice looking airplane!

Kentucky has state parks with airports. Rough River, Kentucky Dam, and Lake Barkley come up with a google search.

No camping but I'm at KMBT, Murfreesboro just south of Nashville. I don't have much time at home coming up so it might be hard to catch me but let me know if you come through.

I think you probably meant GA2? Alexander Memorial? formerly Peachstate?
Anyway, I would recommend GA2 as well. Nice stop.

Re: Camping trip in the eastern US

Nice looking ship you've got there!

Will this trip extend into mid September? If so, two recommendations:

Weekend of 9/7, Greenville Intl Seaplane Fly-in. The 50(75?) seaplanes are usually matched by a like number of land planes at the nearby airport. Many camp out. Cool event. https://www.seaplanefly-in.org

Following weekend, 9/14. Wings and Wheels in Hammondsport, NY. Smaller event, cool little town, grass strip close by. You'd likely be camping alone here. Last year we flew a 1914 Curtiss flying boat. I'd like to get it out for an encore this year. No promises on that...

Re: Camping trip in the eastern US

I stopped by a super-cool airstrip this summer: Van Sant in Eastern Pennsylvania. Not sure if you can camp there, but I highly recommend you add it to your list of things to do!

Another place that I've wanted to go and haven't (yet) is Lee Bottom in Hanover Indiana.

Good luck with your trip! Let me know if you make it to Arkansas.

Re: Camping trip in the eastern US

Feel free to swing by our strip as well. 0NY0 (Bennet's Field in North Creek, NY) 3,000' grass strip. I can hook you up with a vehicle and we have camping at our rafting base just a few minutes from the strip. Lot's of outdoor stuff to do here. We own a whitewater Co. and also have a bunch of canoes & kayaks too. Decent Mt. biking as well.

Re: Camping trip in the eastern US

Never been here but might be a place to stop------Aeroflex-Andover Airport
Andover, New Jersey, USA

Also, Fayetteville WVa might be worth a stop. Never stopped at the airport but flown over the New River Gorge bridge( they let you parachute off of it one day a year). Have been there many times driving and a cool place and Hawks Nest is not far from there either.

Re: Camping trip in the eastern US

For your New England legs, check out Parlin Field in Newport, NH (2B3). On-field camping with campsites built along the treeline west of the runway with recent additions of picnic tables and solar powered USB chargers donated by The RAF. Paved 3,450' runway (18/36) and 1,980' grass runway (12/30). Loaner bicycles available to ride into town (about a mile) or hit the trails near the airport. A river runs along the west side as well, for some swimming and/or fishing.

Re: Camping trip in the eastern US

Thanks to all for compliments on my bird and suggestions on where to go. Greatly appreciated!
Unfortunately I'll have to be back at the hangar by about Sept. 3, so fly-ins in September will have to wait for next year.

I made Gadabout Gaddis in Maine my first stop. Highly recommended! Beautiful spot, perfect for camping, all facilities, and whitewater rafting!

Re: Camping trip in the eastern US

Congrats on a beautiful airplane. Keep the camping airport ideas coming. This has been a great resource for those of us on the East Coast where the pickins seem to be more slim or at least not advertised as well as out west.
