Can you change Lycoming subtype on Std Airworthiness A/C?
Lycoming, Continental, Hartzell, McCauley, or any broad spectrum drive system component used on multiple type.
A friend wants to perform the Stoots Av’n IO-360-M1B STC’d convert on his C170. That engine, although certified, isn’t common to std airworthiness aircraft but is found on Lancairs and RV’s. Certainly on exp A/c you can find an engine with most of the parts and switch over any needed parts in order to make the variant. Can you do that legally on a cert engine and change the dataplate?

If it's specified in the Stoots STC, I think that's all you need.

I would say not, BUT, what I say has little to do with what your IA would say. I will do a little digging and see if I can come up with a better answer. I also have a friend interested in the STC let me know if you find a good source for the motors he is looking for one. Used is fine.

If you look up the TCDS 1E10 for the engine you will see several variants of the 0360 on the same TCDS. As long as the parts came off another engine on the same TCDS it should be an engine logbook note only and data plate stamp. The STC will let you put the engine on the airplane. This is my understanding of how things work. I could be wrong or your IA may not approve so I would check with him/her first!!

This is how I understand it as well. My engine shop confirmed it with my continental that I switched from a -D to a -F. They said they can do the same with lycomings.
