Re: Canada ForeFlight Subscribe?

Yes, excellent! used it my last trip last fall, and it would be worth it even if I was only making 1 trip each year, No more chart shuffling and supplement squinting for me =D>

And in the end, it wasn't much more than buying all the charts I needed getting back and forth to AK anyway.

SlowHawk,

Good to go! Thank you.

Would we also need paper charts in Canada?

G'day.

:-k I don't know, didn't ask #-o

Not sure why you would though, all the navCanada supplement information is included and updated monthly. And as I have said before, I have only once actually seen a customs official in all my trips and they just asked for my drivers license, not even my passport, unlike the colonoscopy I normally get on our side of the border  , Guess I have gotten a little less concerned about our Canadian friends over time.

ForeFlight is great but it sure is a data hog, especially
when you get Canada in there. I've filled a 32 gb
to overflowing.

Re: Canada ForeFlight Subscribe?

If you have a current version of Foreflight for Canada you don't need paper charts. The Regulation only requires that you "have the information and publications required for the proposed route of flight". It does not specify the format that the information and publications must be in. Electronic flight bags are fine.

BTW Canada Customs Officers do not have the Ministerial Delegation to enforce the Aeronautics Act or the Canadian Aviation Regulations. Only Transport Canada Inspectors and RCMP officers can do it...and most cops can't be bothered...can't blame 'em.

Dave, go to downloads and hit the delete key at the bottom. When given the choice, select "delete all EXPIRED data" or something like that. My FF was a data hog too until I realized I was holding onto a lot of extra stuff.

Re: Canada ForeFlight Subscribe?

When I flew through Canada to Alaska...via Scobe boarder crossing. Discovered the Foreflight subscription.......Frequencies weren't exactly accurate. Picked up the Canadian supplement in Medicine Hat. Eventually depended upon it for tower frequency and ground. Don't use the Scobie crossing...they get around 8 aircraft per year and don't monitor their assigned radio frequency....I chose to use the boarder crossing because I couldn't get into Lethbridge due to weather. Runway wasn't mowed..... Landed on the American side....figured I'd pretend to be an automobile.....stop on the American side....bla bla.....didn't matter. Got searched by the Canadians....every pocket, nook and crany.. They were nice once I produced my flight plan on Foreflight and looked into their data base for badness. My buddy on the other hand....got the treatment....could hear his voice get louder and higher pitched as things went south...The American customs gal was really gruff....eventually exhibited some niceness. Did finally get a bill for Canadian ATC service. Something like $17.40

Re: Canada ForeFlight Subscribe?

There are a lot of tricks to reducing the hogginess of FF. The most obvious is not to load the states/provinces you're not going to use. Yeah, it's a lot easier just to load everything, but unless you have a 128GB iPad where it doesn't matter, taking a little time to block the ones you won't use frees up a lot of space. Of course, since I've said that, I don't do it--might get a wild hair to flit off to Texas or Maine or Oregon or somewhere. :)

Re: Canada ForeFlight Subscribe?

I use Foreflight Canada, just renewed my subscription. I think it is pretty good. A little pricey, but I was suckered by the new 3D view that's available.

There are cheaper options, like Fltplan Go from Fltplan.com. Gives you all the maps, breadcrumb trail, VFR Flt Supplement. I think it is (or was) free.

I also have Air Nav Pro, has aviation charts and a variety of other maps you can download. Worldwide coverage. Map quality depends on country. Also has 3D view, but a whole different look than Foreflight.

And Jepp FD, worldwide approach plate and hi/low alt IFR chart subscription (expensive!). Tried their VFR app and it was great, but nothing for Canada.

I don't use paper anything.

We used Foreflight Canada on our trip to Alaska last summer and it worked great! Definitely worth it.

FF is clearly a good choice from reading the posts. Just use what you need and watch the storage.

Thank you for the expedition input!

Very good deal, that would be very easy to consider too. Glad to see others.

I guess I am brand loyal, bought the Canadian FF subscription ($150) last night. Everything I do right now is FF, they hooked me!

Same here, on my second renewal of USA and Canada Pro last month.
On synthetic vision, all registered obstacles, towers and airports pop up. Now that's a plus...

The embedded cfs is in foreflight?

Re: Canada ForeFlight Subscribe?

I actually think the cost of foreflight covers itself with the cost of the updated Nav Canada charts and CFS for the year. I only buy new charts now when I tear them. And I use the outdated CFS as a chock when I fuel.

The CFS download and Canadian Sectionals subscriptions are for free on the FLTPLAN GO app. Can't beat that.

If you find that FF's comm frequencies are not accurate, I'm sure FF would like to know that--they're incredibly responsive to email contacts. Personally, I take the frequencies off the approach plates in the US FF subscription, which I would think are as up to date as possible. I would think the same would be true of the Canadian charts.

Good tip. I have to say the charts are a little awkward. FF seems like a decent system, however.
