CAR-3 and oil pressure gauge replacement

Since my 1956 C-180 is CAR-3 I can replace my sticky oil pressure gauge with an NON - TSO'd pressure gauge

Correct ? :?: :?: :?: :?:

if the consensus is yes it does not need to be TSO'd because of the CAR-3 guidelines... then ......

why can one not replace all engine gauges with a non primary engine monitor....that is not TSO'd ... [-X

I'm I missing some basic level of logic in my thinking. :?:

Re: CAR-3 and oil pressure gauge replacement

For that matter, how about replacing the primary flight instruments with glass?
IMHO that's technically OK per CAR 3, but an FAA inspector might take a different point of view.
Installing a modern glass non-required instrument is one thing, but right or wrong a fuss might be made for primary instruments.
I dunno what non-certified engine monitor you're interested in, but if I was gonna put one in my old 180 I'm partial to EI's CGR-30P and it's STC'd. $4K- a lot of dough but I doubt any of the good ones are cheap.

actually I was thinking the G300 (gx3) for the engine monitor its what was in the Cessna Skycatchers. its also 4.5 K but has a lot of other stuff :D

keeping steam gauges for primary flight controls, using Gx3 as an engine monitor.
the other functions would be a bonus (backup)

I won't know till i fill out appropriate paperwork and talk to the FAA [-X

hope i don't have to wait for the 23 revision to go through.

Re: CAR-3 and oil pressure gauge replacement

If the FAA moves it along like they did 3rd class medical reform,
we can expect the part 23 revisions by about 2023.
