Is that a good thing? One of the things the FAA is good for is ensuring the standards of maintenance, but this industry is one its knees as it is, with prices at an all time high for overhauls and work, likely due in part to insurance costs.

Good story, and good job on bringing it down in one piece. I about spewed beer though with the "hair loom" bit. :)

Re: Caravan Dead Stick

Nice work. I saw a Caravan carcass that dead sticked into Mesquite NV. last year after a self inflicted flameout that ended in a wild ride off the end of the runway, over airport road and stopped in a large divit at wolf creek golf course. http://www.ktnv.com/news/local/135805548.html

KTNV did a great job on that 172 crash story.

Kind of sums up the state of journalism in our country.

To Dogpilot: Great job on bringing her back in one piece (twice). I'd buy you a beer.

I'd argue that no matter what paper/website news agency, it's a crap shoot whether an aviation event will be reported well, and it's all about the individual doing the reporting. I've seen some fairly good stories, and a lot of bad ones. Sometimes they read like they're written for pilots, but most often they're written for the layman. I'm not sure it's indicative of the state of journalism, or a waning interest in aviation.

After all, I've been told by two different Caravan drivers........ "If you can fly a 172, you can fly a Caravan". Maybe that's where the "172" typo came from??? :D

Users pay a PREMIUM price to have aviation related equipment serviced. Two motors that are bad out of the same shop is disturbing at best and deadly at worst The FAA apparently is not so good at ensuring the standards for maintenance as the OP can testify to poor quality... These kerosene burners cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to overhaul, there is NO excuse for two bad motors to come out of a repair station. Even worse was the same pilot got dealt a potentially deadly hand.......... twice... If the industry is on its knees, then they need to sharpen their pencils and pay closer attention to Quality control....

What if the OP was killed ? Would we be defending the shop then ? #-o

Scary. If there's one thing I dread, it's the PT6 up front going quite. Whilst we train for it regularly, the terrain is somewhat hostile out here...

Re: Caravan Dead Stick

It doesn't matter much whether it's a turbine or a piston engine, when it comes apart, be glad for all of the emphasis on emergency landings during training. Been there, done that, and very glad for my first instructor's insistence on getting really good at picking spots to land.

Glad to hear the end results after the failure were OK.

Re: Caravan Dead Stick

Dogpilot- was that the Caravan that put down on the sea ice up here in December? Heard that pilot found the only smooth stretch for miles around, and did a stellar job getting it safely down.

Re: Caravan Dead Stick (with video!)

Found this video tonight. Figured it would be a good place to post. Not the same incident but worth watching.

Re: Caravan Dead Stick

Never stop flying.
Absolutely the best advice, no matter what you're flying, no matter what the circumstances, emergency or not. Giving up is a killer--or at the least, a great way to seriously damage an airplane.

When my engine threw a rod so that I had to land in a field, all that emphasis on engine-out scenarios that my first instructor threw at me turned out to be incredibly valuable. I'd also had a recent insurance checkout with my FBO, just before I'd bought my airplane, which helped. But having the automatic responses that come with repetitive training is truly a life-saver.

Re: Caravan Dead Stick

That last-second turn to runway heading looked like it was as/after the LH main touched. Great job.
