Carb ice on takeoff

I’ve had carb ice on takeoff a couple of times over the last few years, but this year it is pretty bad. If it is zero or below zero, I get enough ice just after take off to really make you think it’s going to shut off. I’ve started taking off with full carb heat in those temperatures. This is only on the first takeoff of the day.
The only things different this year are a “seal” around the air filter to keep air from going around it into the lower cowl, and a carb overhaul. My carb was not giving enough fuel, I was only getting 19gph on takeoff. I sent it to Lycon to be flowchecked, I got it back overhauled. Now it gives me 22 to 24 gph on takeoff.
On 3 occasions, it starts choking about a minute or less after takeoff, as it’s acting like it’s going to quit, I pull in carb heat, it chokes, sputters, and still acts like it’s going to shut off. The carb temp gauge on the 830 shows the temp coming up, but it doesn’t get very warm, it’s enough to melt the ice, but it’s under 50 degrees in that situation.
It’s a ‘53 with a 520 dual exhaust where the left side muffler does carb heat with a 2.5” scat hose. I’ve seen several other later models with just a little elbow off of the down pipe on the #6 cylinder. I’ve been told it works better, as the air has just come over the cylinder the to the elbow on the exhaust. But, I’ve only seen that setup on single muffler 470’s.
Has anyone used the little elbow off the #6 cylinder with a dual exhaust 180?

I’ve run full carb heat in cruise with temps around zero and the best I get on carb temp is in the 40’s.

Sorry, I can't help remedy but this carb ice detector might be a better way to determine if you have ice ice, intake leak or other power loss. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/ ... etect2.php

It’s vary likly your carb heat box/flapper/cable needs attention.

Also, do you have the foam rubber pipe insulation covering your intake crossover tube? This is a big deal in the right winter conditions.

The winter kit in your ipc, do you have it or use it. The reduction plate that goes over your air filter causes your carb to run more rich to compensate for the cold dense air, carb heat basicly does the same thing: warmer air=less dense.

Tape over 25-30% of your oil cooler?

Lot if missing info on your first comment: atmosfiric conditions, temps, location, what kind of aircraft, what kind of CAT gage, etc?

Re: Carb ice on takeoff

There is nothing wrong with the air box. Flapper works as it’s supposed to, new bearings on the shaft and new flapper two years ago, and it is rigged properly.

I’m not wondering if I have carb ice, I KNOW I get carb ice.

I guess it wasn’t explicitly stated, it’s a 53 180 with a 520, knisely dual exhaust.

Re: Carb ice on takeoff

When you say below zero are you talking Centigrade or Fahrenheit? Do you change your fuel selector valve setting between flights IE off to single tank or both, can you feel the detent on both. Mine was dirty and would not be fully engaged I could do a run up with no problem but it would lean out once I started to pull the prop back. If it only happens first flight of the day and below 0 degrees Fahrenheit I would suspect some other issue. Double check all your intake boots and insulate cross over tube if not done.

Re: Carb ice on takeoff

I'd try insulating the crossover tube like others have suggested.
But FWIW a friend of mine ponked his 54 model,
after which he had trouble with it making ice all the time.
He tried different crossover tubes (I think there's three different sizes?)--it still made ice.
He ended up installing Bendix fuel injection.
