3 dead in Mount Si plane crash

Flying VFR in some nasty terrain at 3am with poor visibility.

NORTH BEND -- Three people were killed when the small plane they were in crashed early Wednesday near North Bend.

Sheriff's Sgt. Cindi West said the single-engine Cessna 172 hit a shear face at Mount Si just after 2 a.m., killing the woman and two men who were on board.

Officials said several people in the area called 911 after hearing a sputtering engine from a low flying plane. The callers told dispatchers the plane's engine cut out before the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration picked up a signal from the plane's emergency transponder, and a King County sheriff's helicopter flew over the area to locate the wreckage.

Search and rescue crews on the ground made it to the crash scene about 7:30 a.m. and found the bodies.

It was not known where the plane was headed, and the names of the people who were killed have not been released.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Mike Fergus said preliminary information indicates the plane was not in contact with air traffic control.

WOW. Night VFR in the mountains. I have never done it so I guess I am missing out on the fun. Does everbody know that night VFR in Canada is forbidden.

Hate to here about this stuff. It effects way more that these three that died.

Sorry fôr the family but night vfr in mountains and not much moon ?? The wisdom in this escapes me!
Btw night vfr is quite legal in Canada but you need a night rating which is 15 hrs of instruction.
5 of instrument, 2 dual, and the ramainder under supervision.

Makes you wonder where they were headed and why .What a Bummer....

Many long years ago I did night VFR over the mountains numerous times in much higher performance singles--and I have to wonder why--what was I thinking???? So I have to ask the same question of this pilot. It's hard to imagine any flight that is so important that it needs to be conducted in a lower performance airplane probably near gross (3 adults in a 172) over (or in) the mountains at night.

Good idea. I must have thought no night VFR cus when I flew up to BC, I could not do it. Can a Yank fly night VFR if he is rated IFR. did that even make sence?
