You're never too old to learn something stupid.

I thought I would break down some of the takeoffs and landings from the trip. Here's some video from Mexican Mountain, Mineral Canyon, Dirty Devil and Happy Canyon. Sometimes it's nice to get a look at the area before you land there, and as always, the scenery in UT is spectacular.

Hi Matt,
Great quality HD video sequences. Interested in your video setup and the make and model video camera you use. No vibration mounting? Gimballed? Have you tried three axis remote control? Lots of questions.
We enjoy mountain flying in the beautiful NW cascades of Washington State. It's not flyover country to us.
There is so much rugged wilderness and beauty to capture when you get down close in there.

Thanks Aussie,

I just try to keep it cheap and simple. I'm using a Drift HD170 with a ram mount. Pilotmall has the ram mount for the strut and a motorcycle mount for the inside. No fancy gimbals or 3 axis remotes, just start and stop and hope for the best. I do get a little vibration here and there, but I just shoot a bunch of video and edit what I don't like (both airspeed and engine/prop will cause vibration). Also, a good computer and editing software is almost as important as the camera equip.

PM me if you want more info. Or check out this thread as there a lot of good info in there:

Thanks for the info Matt. I like the KISS approach as camera stuff can get sophisticated and expensive fast.
I had seen some blurb on the HD170 last year but thought that not having image stabilization it would be a problem especially with two stroke engines at lower revs. Your vids show no problem with vibration and video editing can help too. For the price it's worth a try and the camera ram mount will work great. Again thanks. Michelle

Michelle, I mount my HD 170 right to the bar in the cabin to my left..it amazes me how well this camera handles the vibration. That was part of the problem with my Fuji camera..it did not handle the vibration well and I had to "Tune" the mount for the camera which didn't work all that well because of the changing engine vibration.

The faster I go , the farther behind I get.

Re: Caveman Ranch (UT) BCP fly-in video

I tried a smallpillow case with filled with fine sand on the dash above my instruments and settled the video camera into it until it was sighted OK. It worked somewhat OK but had to be held in place by hand. My hubby and I are both pilots so one flys and one takes vids or visa versa...... "OK slow turn - keep the wing up - side slip. OK hold it.....hold it. What's that buzzing sound? Oh!!! Flying is so great!!
