I guess for some, I've got 5 phones and 3 iPads on my plan and all share the GBs I've never had my bookie complain to me that we got charged big for using extra Gigs.

If you're running on battery power, leaving the data turned on in flight will drain the battery fast due to the device constantly searching for a signal. I have a hard wired ipad mini mount so I usually leave the data on if there's a chance I might get coverage (flying down low or in mountainous terrain). If I know there's no chance I just turn the data off.
