The extra "fin" in front of the vertical stabalizer was a seaplane mod done by Willey Sea Planes in Lake Oswego Oregon, they hold the STC. Its supposed to give you extra rudder authority for float operations; however, there is no record of this plane ever being on floats. I've seen maybe 2 other 120/140s with the same fin and a couple others with curved fins making the tail resemble that of a 170.

8.50's would be great, but keep the weight in mind. They are about 30lbs heavier than 8.00s I believe. With 115hp on the front I would think the C140 would out perform my C170 with the stock motor.

I installed 8.50s on the K-A Champ last summer. It gained only 9 pounds over the 7.00 tires that she was wearing before the change. The 8.50s were used, though, so missing some rubber. They were Goodyears; McCreary's may be heavier (or lighter).

I have a useful load of 505 pounds with the 8.50s. 156 of gas, and I'm at 350 for people (OK; 349). I'm around 200, dressed for flying; Mrs. B is 115 or so. We have room for toothbrushes and clean underwear!

The K-A Champ has only 90hp on the front, so I can definitely land in shorter places than I can get back out of. With a 74 x 42 prop, she's slow, too. Way faster than a Cub but still slow. ;-)

Thanks for the takeoff vid, Rob.

You posted some great photo's there, Rob. I think I recognize a few places- the beach takeoff looks like Copalis, and the grass strip takeoff (looking back shot) looks like Daybreak. That's a beautiful little strip, eh? A bunch of us from Port Townsend used to camp there overnight every year on the way home from Evergreen. The owners were really nice, hospitable people- in spite of some a**holes doing their best one year to abuse that hospitality by doing repeated fly-by's, etc and pissing off all the neighbors. I haven't been there in a few years, gonna put it on my list for this summer for sure! Where are the other places? Looks like maybe a couple on the Columbia somewhere?
From the tailnumber, that red-and-white 140 looks lkike the one I referenced in my earlier post. Who owns it now, and where's it based?
A friend of mine owns a 120 which has the same added dorsal as yours, hers still has the C-85. I don't know if there's paperwork on it. I kinda like the way it looks, the dorsal-free vertical stab. on the 120/140 and ragwing 170 has always looked a little too plain to me.

Zane:

The Champ -> C-170 deal went to pieces just last week. There's an old loan release issue (from 1961) in the Champ's history that we couldn't clear up, and my buyer went away.

The good news is that everyone is disappointed but being gentlemen about it. We understand that things can happen and it's nobody's fault.

I keep the Champ, Bill keeps the 170, we keep flying. There are worse things that can happen to us, I s'pose.

Jon,

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. I guess your going to be buzzing the sunny skis with the KA-Champ for awhile. Look at the bright side....you'll be useing less gas.

Damn, that sucks. 1961 is a long time ago, how can you not clean that up?

The FAA accepted a loan release from a different bank than the original lender. There was nothing to show that the loan was transferred, so the title company won't accept the release. The FAA screwed up but won't fix it.

The original bank has since been declared insolvent, gone into receivership and had all its records destroyed. Wells Fargo now owns the bank that issued the release but has no records back that far.

The laywer who was running the whole affair and the judge who officiated over it all have both stated that the original loan will never, ever be resurrected. The statute of limitations has expired, there's a release recorded and 45 years have passed. The loan is *dead*. Neither the FAA nor the title company care, though. Their position is that a judge now has to issue an order declaring the original loan to be null and void. I had hoped that the judge could simply do that by pointing to existing documents, but nope.

I'll get it fixed eventually - or sell it to someone that doesn't care. Either way, the 170 deal is a bust.

I hadn't intended to hijack the thread. Please return to your regularly scheduled C-140 discussion! ;-)

Well, I already mentioned this in the chicken strip thread, but I took my little dandy to the chicken strip, wheel pants and all! I thought the strip was a little rough, but I suppose anywhere you can land with wheel pants isn't that bad...

Prosecco performed admirably on the gravel strip...the downhill takeoff run helped a lot! I was airborn much sooner than I thought I would be, which is always good. Hope the photos come through...I'm a special person when it comes to computers...

OK, I have no idea how to attack photos...thought it would be easy, which it probably is, but not for me. I'll do some research and try again.
