Re: Cessna 140 Rejuvenation

Finally got a chance to fly with the new panel installed. Everything is working as it should with the exception of the airspeed indicator on the G5...... Based on the groundspeed, the G5 is indicating an airspeed approximately 10mph lower than it should be. Although not perfect, the analog airspeed is much closer to the actual airspeed (it was never too accurate anyways...) Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting the G5 airspeed? There are no leaks in the pitot system, so would the way the tubing is bent affect indicated airspeed? I get that its not a certified airspeed for the plane, but it sure would be nice if it worked right... Thanks!

Re: Cessna 140 Rejuvenation

Have you tried testing it with a pitot/static tester to see how far off it actually is? Did you just use rubber tubing to go from the AS to the G5? Then a tight bend might be slowing the air flow... hard to tell without seeing it.

Unfortunately I dont have access to a pitot static tester... the only way I could verify the analog airspeed was with the ground speed. The tubing is all aluminum with a T-fitting between the airspeed and G5. If I don't have any success making it work as is, I'll switch to rubber tubing and see what that does

Try disconnection the Static line from the unit, most stock 120/140’s had them disconnected under the dash as it would give erroneous airspeed indications. Mine was disconnected for that reason.

Re: Cessna 140 Rejuvenation

I'll have to give that a shot! Since its not mandatory equipment to have the altimeter for the G5 hooked up to the static, should not be an issue!

Re: Cessna 140 Rejuvenation

Tried what you suggested with the static and it worked beautifully! All is well with airspeed and altitude. All that's left now is to finish cleaning glue out of the interior, install the new desser 8.50s, touch up the red paint, and give it a good polish. Been getting distracted by flying, way more fun [emoji6]

Re: Cessna 140 Rejuvenation

Got the desser 8.50's installed today. Currently have them at 20psi each, but they still look kinda low and squishy. I know they're supposed to be much squishier than normal tires, but does this look right?

Re: Cessna 140 Rejuvenation

The red dot is perfect! And the tires are proportionally sized with no longitudinal grooves! Nice.

Thanks! Thought it would make the 140 look a little more proper

You are welcome.

There is a an old crop dusting strip about 4.5 NM North of you. I know my buddies used it about 20 years ago, not sure about status today however. It may even have a wind sock.

Re: Cessna 140 Rejuvenation

I'll have to check that out. Haven't seen anything that looks like a strip near kapolei. The only one I know of is up by wheeler, and you need prior permission to land

Re: Cessna 140 Rejuvenation

Finally got off my lazy ass and began the arduous never ending task of polishing. I really like the results, and this is with the lowest grade of polish. Hopefully will have the entire fuselage done with the low grade before it ships in 2 weeks. Once back in Massachusetts, I'll finish it up.

Also: bigrenna, you're a bad influence... your 180 thread got me all excited about polishing [emoji13]

What product are you polishing with?
I've had good results with Nuvite and just picked up some Flitz but havent tried it yet.

Trying out something called brightwork. Seems to do a pretty good job. The shine came out really nice and that's only with their lowest grade of polish. I still have to go back later with the medium and high grades

Re: Cessna 140 Rejuvenation

Am I the only one taking weight reduction seriously? Getting rid of all the unnecessary parts [emoji6]

ACTUALLY, removed all the fairings, propeller, vertical fin, elevators and rudder to begin preparations for container shipping the plane from Hawaii to California. The 140's final Hawaiian flight took place last Thursday. Wings and horizontal stab come off tomorrow! Need a second set of hands to get the stab off since I have the misfortune of needing to crawl down the tailcone to get to the bolts, and my brother in law is the unfortunate winner. Luckily for him, I'll be the one in the tail... No idea why cessna didnt put an access cover back there.....

Re: Cessna 140 Rejuvenation

You could really dress her up for the long trip by redoing the red stripes with a rattle can.
Would really change her look and be easy to remove when you decide to officially redo them.
