Cessna 170B Sportsman STOL: PIREP
Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

It's been a couple of years since you installed the Sportsman upgrade on your 170B.
Any change in heart? Still glad you made the upgrade?
Now that you have experience in the Backcountry, any pearls of wisdom to share?

The Sportsman STOL kit was the best mod I ever did on the 170. The low speed handling characteristics were excellent. I feel it made the airplane a lot more comfortable to operate in and out of short strips and off airport. I sold my 170 2 months ago. I have a 180 now with a Mid-America STOL kit and and BLR VGs and it is not as good as the Sportsman. Eventually I want to put a Sportsman on the 180 as well.
Here's a video that I shot and avidflyer on here edited. It shows how well the 170 with Sportsman handles slow flight. We were flying around low and super slow doing touch-and-goes along a lake shore. IAS was below 40 mph at times and probably never got over 50.
