Dog is my Copilot wrote:You did a great job restoring that plane. It's beautiful and has the classic paint of that era. I have a 58 C180 and love flying tailwheels but in all honesty most of the places I fly don't require it. After watching Larry fly his C182 just about everywhere imaginable I see no real limitations for the C182 other than you will go through propellers a little bit faster. You will save on insurance. If you really get desperate home sick for having the tailwheel you could always do the conversion - especially since you have the mechanical skills.

I agree with all of that, well said! By the time I weigh the expense and effort to convert it to a tailwheel, it makes more sense just to fly another taildragger to scratch that itch.

Besides, there’s something interesting about the low rider 1961 D model 182! It sits so low compared to everything else, it’s kinda different. The canoe shaped wheel pants are fun too.

Picked up the all metal C180 yokes today from the powder coater. They came out great. The gloss ivory came out exactly how we hoped.

And they look even better once they’re installed on the plane.

Aryana wrote:The Bakelite yokes original to this plane are terrible. You can feel them flexing when you flare to land. We’ve seen these plastic Cessna yokes break before.

We sourced some all metal (aluminium) yokes from a Cessna 180 will install without any modification.

They’re crusty and gross, so I’m having them stripped and powdercoated a nice gloss ivory color.

We’re considering selling this airplane in the spring/summer. It’s just not flying enough and for short local hops the 170B is better. I guess if we traveled long distances more often it would make more sense.

Re: Cessna 170B to 182D

We sold the plane today to a family friend who is a new pilot and had a mishap with his 1960 182C (off runway excursion during a large crosswind and totaled it when the left main gear got pushed aft about 2”).

It sure was nice to have it around but we still have 3 other airplanes so it’s a relief to have one less airplane to maintain.

Here’s a shot of the totaled 182C left main gear. The main bolt that holds it in place was totally sheared and the whole gearbox has been trashed with rivets popping out and bent sheet metal.

Farewell to this beauty, but it’s not going far...only the next hangar row!

Wow, I love that 182! Very cool retro look and great performing useful airplane to boot!

I'm confused- should this thread title be amended to include "...and back again"?

Maybe!

I’m really excited about flying our Christen Eagle II that’s on the verge of being finished. Also buried in a Citabria restoration too, so not flying much especially with all the blustery weather here in CA.
