Re: Cessna 170B to 182D

Had to stop lurking and start posting. That’s a great looking 182D and at a steal of a price. I really like what you did with the interior. Are those seats just recovered or did you pick up taller ones?

I’m in the middle of buying a ‘61 182D, should be here next Monday. I also don’t know what to do for tires but I know some prop clearance would be nice for when the nose nugget finds a gopher hole.

Re: Cessna 170B to 182D

Thank's Moss farmer. So do you think if the nose wheel of a 182 ended up in the same mud hole there would not be any damage to the nose gear/fire wall and/or a prop strike? Still damage, just different.

Re: Cessna 170B to 182D

I believe that it possibly would have damaged it in some way--- firewall, nose wheel or even one of the mains. The mud was about 2 to 3 feet deep with about a foot of water on top.

Thank you! The existing seats were stripped and redone with an Airtex kit.

Congrats on your plane. Please come back and post a pic when it’s in your hands. I’d love to see it.

Re: Cessna 170B to 182D

We took both planes out to Byron Airport today (home base of the Patriots jet demo team of L-39’s).

Gas was cheap there, only $4.75 a gallon.

The wind was howling at over 25-30 knots. I was taxing around the 182 like nothing was different while the 170 was almost uncontrollable on the tarmac without dragging tons of brake to keep it from weathervaning.

The 170 handles like a small, lightweight, underpowered sports sedan. The 182 handles like a large, heavy, SUV with a big ol engine. It’s an interesting switch.

The lines of this bird keep looking better and better to me.

Nice plane you can be proud of! That is some engine detailing job based on before/after photos. How long did the project take? I’d like to see more pics of your hangar; looks fun. Nice ZRX too!

Welcome to the tricycle club! I have a 182P and love it. Amazing performer and terrific cabin space.

Thank you! The whole project took about 6 months. I’ll snap some pics of the hangar next time I’m out there.

The ZRX is a addiction. Another BCP member and I (Flying Dave) have an insane amount of money in these bikes.

Mine has almost as much HP as an O-470 =)

Great looking airplanes! Bike looks awesome too.

I've been plane less for the past few years but when I really need a fix I call up a friend that has a 1960 182C. Great airplanes IMO. Reasonably fast, good looking, and quite capable. No doubt you'll have a lot of fun in your new ride.

Re: Cessna 170B to 182D

Congrats on snagging a great deal on a great bird. There are lots of reasons why 182s are one of the best selling planes over many decades. While they're not always the "best" machine for any given mission, they are one of the best all around. Love mine both on floats and wheels.

Image

I have both ABW 29s with 8.50 nose, and 8.50 mains with 7.00 nose all mounted up. While the 29's are tres cool and fun, the 8.50's are for me the best combination of practicality, durability, speed, and handling the moderately rough LZ's.

I know there's another thread debating STOL mods. I'll just say that I am happy with my combo of Sportsman cuff, Wing extensions, and Micro Aero VG's on my 1964 G model with IO550.

Thanks! It’s been fun so far. Had a nice sunset flight picking my way through the cloud layers to get home yesterday.

Cessna 170B to 182D

The Bakelite yokes original to this plane are terrible. You can feel them flexing when you flare to land. We’ve seen these plastic Cessna yokes break before.

Image

We sourced some all metal (aluminium) yokes from a Cessna 180 will install without any modification.

They’re crusty and gross, so I’m having them stripped and powdercoated a nice gloss ivory color.

Image

Image

We’re considering selling this airplane in the spring/summer. It’s just not flying enough and for short local hops the 170B is better. I guess if we traveled long distances more often it would make more sense.

Selling? I love my 170 but the utility of that 182 is really nice! Keep 'em both, you can't have too many toys

You never see an armored car behind a hearse. [emoji848]

You might be on to something! [emoji16]

I wasn’t a fan of 182’s until I saw this D model with the extra windows and fastback fuselage. It is a darn nice plane and sure does cover a lot of different missions.

As much as my ego wants a 180/185 with big tires, the accomplished tailwheel pilot in me appreciates how great this plane is when the wind is howling & gusting at 90 degrees to the runway. It is light years easier to land and taxi in comparison to its tailwheel brethren. Also I don’t land off airport as much as I’d like so I’m much less of a poser with this bird than if I had a Skywagon set up for the backcountry.

Now that I don’t have anything to prove anymore in this stage of my aviation career (the macho taildragger thing), I really appreciate that. It’s especially wonderful when I have my family on board and conditions aren’t ideal.

In contrast, I’ve been in my 170B landing in massive gusting crosswinds with my family on board, wondering what the chances of bending up the airplane is (in my head of course...not gonna freak them out, and my wife already understands how tailwheel aircraft can bite!)

Wish we could keep all these planes but hangaring, insuring, and maintaining them gets expensive.

Re: Cessna 170B to 182D

That is one sweet looking fastback!! I like the older fastbacks, but that might be a little biased since my 172A is that style.

If you read the fantastic book “Cessna, Wings of the World” by William D. Thompson, he talks about some of the problems Cessna encountered with conversion of fastback to Omni Vision on some of the 100 series planes.

Thompson was an engineering test pilot for Cessna for 28 years. Great read.

Re: Cessna 170B to 182D

You did a great job restoring that plane. It's beautiful and has the classic paint of that era. I have a 58 C180 and love flying tailwheels but in all honesty most of the places I fly don't require it. After watching Larry fly his C182 just about everywhere imaginable I see no real limitations for the C182 other than you will go through propellers a little bit faster. You will save on insurance. If you really get desperate home sick for having the tailwheel you could always do the conversion - especially since you have the mechanical skills.
