Re: Cessna 180 control wheels

Thanks for checking. I did replace one of my old plastic control wheels with one from a C210, but could only find that one at the time, and wasn’t willing to wait for a matched pair for safety reasons.

Re: Cessna 180 control wheels

I love the older style yokes, over the newer style yokes I see a lot of folks replace them with. I think many replace them because the older style don’t have PPT switches like the newer ones do. I custom fabricated my own switches. I also flipped the entire yoke up side down, this aids in about a yoke being about 3” n the bottom higher and gives you that much desired knee spacing you find on newer airplanes. I stripped all the plastic coating off and took several hours prepping them so I could get a mirror polish look, they look way better and match the them of the polished exterior of the airplane. Lastly I took a lot of time routing the wire behind the yoke, leather rapping the grip area further hiding of the wires, and lastly routed them through the yoke tube so they are both totally out of the way and offer a very clean look then the coil wire you see so many do.

I have this set for a 210 if you are interested in one or both. The 182 ones are packed away some where. Same yokes but black. Image

Re: Cessna 180 control wheels

As a side note for PTT switches, mine is mounted on the panel.

ImageImage

It's above and to the left of the throttle(orange button), and is in a perfect place to mash with a finger or thumb while your hand is on the throttle.

I didn't think I'd like it at first, but it's really grown on me and like Vinstream's beautiful example, it eliminates the coiled wires hanging from the yoke that most PTT implementations have.

I only have one PTT, but for someone that needed two PTTs could mount another above and to the right of the throttle for the right-seater.

I'm the OP, I did install a set of early model 180 yokes to replace my after-market rams horns.
Loved the old-school look, but they were just a bit too low and interfered with my right hand grabbing flaps 40.
Tried turning them over but then they were too high, plus I didn't care for how that looked.
I ended up reinstalling the rams horns, after shortening the stem just a bit.
They don't look as cool IMHO but are very comfortable.

Re: Cessna 180 control wheels

A1Skinner, my A&P/IA says those C210 yokes are too old to fit my plane. Could you check on the 182 yokes for me?

And Vinstream, those are beautiful! I am jealous indeed.

Re: Cessna 180 control wheels

Doesn’t anyone have a lead on who might do a PTT like you see on the left yoke on this early 180?

Aren’t the early 180 yokes made of solid magnesium or are they hollow?

Thanks!

"Too old" doesn't seem like a valid fitting issue.
I'd suggest measuring 1) the stem diameter, and
2) the length of the stem, from the hole where they connect to the u-joint to the yoke itself.
If those numbers agree with your existing yokes, then they should fit.
Legal or not, signoff-able or not-- that may be a different story.

I just replaced mine in my 1962 180. Nothing was wrong with them - I just wanted the ram horn ones. They are available

I did the same thing many years ago.

Re: Cessna 180 control wheels

My 61’s are plastic and I would never drill them. Seen several just break without any extra holes in them. I procured an aluminum one from a 150(?) that will be going in mine, upside down.

Someone had installed a similar micro-button PTT in my rams horn yoke, apparently glued in place.
It went gunnysack & I destroyed it trying to get it out to fix or replace.
Ended up going with a velcro'd on PTT, mounted where I hit it with my pinky.
Not as clean looking, but it's in a better location for me, plus it's easy to replace if it fails.

Looking for a metal one that matches the look of the original plastic one, if that fits what you removed, I'm interested.

Agreed. I'm brand new to ownership. Apparently my mechanic can tell which ones will fit by looking at the photos and knowing which year they came from, thus what size they are.

So I checked my 182 yoke. It is dimensionally exactly the same as the 210 yokes I have except the overall width is 3/4" wider. The tubes are in much nicer shape in the 210 ones I have. FWIW, the parts book lists the same control wheel assembly for the 53-62 model 180, and 56-62model 182. So I'm not sure why he thinks they are to old for you, as they are from a 1960 aircraft...

Yeah that’s kinda what I’m worried about.

Any chance you still have these yokes available?
