Re: Cessna 180 Jackscrew & SEL-55-01

That is correct. I replaced the Jackscrews on my 180, and the manual I had had them reversed. I triple checked everything, and it looks like they simply said “left” when they meant to say “right”.

Re: Cessna 180 Jackscrew & SEL-55-01

Not only should the stabilator rigging “right” reference be changed to “left”, the drawing shows the trim chain routed incorrectly around the trim wheel sprocket. You’d think an aircraft manufacturer with 60+ yrs lead time could get the service manual right.

Interestingly, the 1963-1968 100-series MM has a completely different procedure, and they have you perform the rigging with the stabilizer installed.

jrc111 - I want to thank you for documenting your repair process and for the photos. This will be an invaluable resource for owners like me who have SEL-55-01 still ahead of us. Hopefully your airplane is back together and you have a great summer of flying ahead of you!

Re: Cessna 180 Jackscrew & SEL-55-01

Test flown this PM, no squawks. The new jackscrews are “tighter”, requiring a little more effort, but by the end of the flight I wasn’t noticing it. Hopefully headed from OK to Seattle in AM for family visit. I’m grateful to view other folks modifications and maintenance, so I’m trying to return the favor. Plus, if I have to go in there again, I know where to find the info. Backcountrypilot.org rocks!

Re: Cessna 180 Jackscrew & SEL-55-01

I got almost all the way through the inspection unscathed. Just as I got the last spec of paint and grime off the aft attach fittings a little crack showed up coming out of the bolt hole. Just ordered replacements from Yingling. At least these parts are reasonably priced at $85ea

Also, I do have some wear on the aft attach fittings. The spacers are rubbing up against the fittings and fuselage back there. We blended it out for now and seemed like a good place for a crack to start. I don't have a picture but will add it to the post when I get back to the hangar. I'm not sure what ordering new parts would do given that the parts in there look like they are in good shape. Seems like there should be a washer in the assembly but there isn't one in the IPC.

Re: Cessna 180 Jackscrew & SEL-55-01

If you're talking about washers to keep the cast hinges from moving side to side on the bushings, I didn't like that either. I made some plastic washer like clips that I snapped over the bushing to help stop the side to side movement. Figured it couldn't hurt.

I’m gonna hope the jackscrew base is fine; even 1/2 of Cessna’s price (which is what Skywagon City usually charges for serviceable parts) is too much (now about $12K ea). Regarding the steel channels, I’m guessing those are P/N 0732603-1 and 0732604-1. They are about $600 each from Yingling. Are those steel, or if not, how do you get steel ones?

I can’t find the part number right now. The new ones are steel. Here is a photo.

I ordered the aft spar fittings from yingling expecting them to be steel, which they weren't. Any info on where to buy the steel fittings?

I called Cessna tech support. Hoping they might have an answer some time today.

I called Cessna, Yingling, Beagles and talked to the Owner of Straight Flight.

Ernie from straight flight has seen the steel fittings but no one else seems to know what I'm talking about. Yingling said there aren't any other options, Beagles seemed to think the steel fittings were a 205/210 specific part, and the Cessna technical specialists left a voicemail saying that the Yingling part was the right one.

So... I'm going to install the aluminum fittings today. At least I won't have galvanic issues that way. I did find a little corrosion under the fitting on the spar when I removed the old ones. Happy to have done this work...

Re: Cessna 180 Jackscrew & SEL-55-01

Ernie at Straight Flight is a good dude. His shop did a door repair on my 182; due to the type of construction in the 50's it basically required pulling the door apart and re-bonding it to repair a corner crack. Fantastic quality of work, and they honored their estimate even though the actual labor ended up being a good bit higher. His tech knew exactly how my old door went together, so I'm not surprised they're familiar with other parts of these aircraft.

Re: Cessna 180 Jackscrew & SEL-55-01

I got a response from Nathan at Airframe Components regarding the steel vs Al fittings:

The part number is 1232624-1 which is used on the Cessna 200 series aircraft.

We have used these on 180 / 185 and must be installed in pairs, also follow the installation per Cessna Service Information Letter, SE84-17 for Cessna 200 series stabilizers.

Re: Cessna 180 Jackscrew & SEL-55-01

Wow, and they are pricey, too. $212 ea for the predrilled versions and $554 ea for the undrilled ones at Yingling. It amazes me that Cessna can make so much more money by not driiling holes. It’s good work if you can find it!

No kidding. You'd think it'd be the other way around...

Re: Cessna 180 Jackscrew & SEL-55-01

I believe someone posted earlier about buying the drilled one and the holes not matching up with their airplane.
That'd explain the lower price.

Re: Cessna 180 Jackscrew & SEL-55-01

What's the best source for the jack screw bearing? The Cessna parts book says it's a AN201KP6A supersedes to a MS276416.

jrc111 wrote:The undrilled $5.4K hockey stick arrived. As a part which superseded the original one, I was interested to see any differences. It was the same thickness/length/configuration and vertical width, however, the horizontal flange (when installed) is about 1/8” wider and has a pair of triple holes. It also came with a pair of 8-32 nutplates also of unknown purpose.

FYI those triple holes are for 185 stiffening "plates" that are bolted across both stringers...
Just had the tail off a 185 recently to address some serious looseness in the horizontal stab... Turned out to be worn out hinge bushings... Bought a whole set from F. Atlee Dodge for just over $230... Heck of a deal considering Yingling wants north of $600 for the same parts.. Did the SB on it while it was apart and found it to be in good shape for an airplane with just over 600 hour's since new..

Regarding jackscrew bearings -

http://cessnadirect.com/an201kp6a supersedes to MS27641-6 about $72.

Skygeek has them for $13:

Good to know about the extra holes in the hockey stick!
