Most of the strength in a pin comes from the outer mass. I’ve seen those pins fabricated from relatively thick-walled 4130 steel tubing; they seem to hold. I personally haven’t seen a lot of play in the crossover linkage, but there are plastic “bearing halves” in the mechanism. If there’s play, that’s where I would look. Easier done with the pedals out, too.
