Cessna 182 29x10 Upgrade

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Re: Cessna 182 29x10 Upgrade

A1skinner, a friend of mine put the Alaska Bushwheel equivalent of Cleveland kit 199-62 on his P model 182. He is running 8.00 tires but wanted to replace the three piece McCauley wheels and brakes and wanted to upgrade to double piston brakes. To make it legal he had to use the FA Dodge STC which lets you install kit 199-62 or -62 on 150's through 180's, 182's, 185's and maybe 205 and 206 but you would have to check. If you ask Alaska Bushwheel they will say they don't know anything about the FA Dodge STC but I had a copy of the STC from installing the kit on my 170B and verified the 182P was listed on the AML. I am fairly certain that he was able to use the anchor plate that came with the kit but could verify that if need be. Hope this helps.

Ya the STC isn't the problem. The Cleveland STC covers switching from the McCauley to the cleveland or ABI wheels. But on a tube gear model 172s the torque plate bolt pattern is totally different then the spring gear models. I would imagine the 182s are the same as the 172. So the one that comes with the ABI kit doesn't work. They are going to build me some, as they have built them before, but it's technically not an approved part. Just wondering how everyone else that's done the big brakes on the tube gear models managed to get the process done. Surely I'm not the first guy to do it...

Tim,

I bought ABI six bolt wheels recently, and they included the Atlee Dodge STC as part of the kit. I didn't have to ask, but in any case, if you look on line, they note this in the specs for these wheels.

Re: Cessna 182 29x10 Upgrade

How things change, a year ago when my buddy wanted to do his Alaska Bushwheels told him they didn't know anything about Atle's STC. Sounds like they got it sorted out at least for some models.

I just checked the parts manual for the 1976 182P and it uses the same part number axle, 0541124-1, the solid aluminum axle, that all 182 used up to that time from the first. This is the same solid aluminum axle that 180s came with before the switch to steel axles. Same as the solid axles on a 170. I don't have a tubular gear 172 parts manual so have no idea if it uses the same axle but the 182 does at least though 1976 and the 199-62 kit anchor plate matches it.

Thanks Tim. I never thought to look in my 182 parts manual.
AA says they've had this problem before. It's funny that the kit is STCd for all 172s even though they dont have the parts to put it on them... sounds about typical for governments to do a gloss over approval without looking at all the info, but if we dare change anything look out!

My buddy is out working for a few weeks but when he gets back I will confirm how the install went.

Re: Cessna 182 29x10 Upgrade

Talked to my buddy with the 182P yesterday. He used the Alaska Bushwheel kit 199-62A (six bolt wheels) with the FA Dodge STC to make it legal. He said there was no problem with the installation except that he is not sure the backing plate for wheel pants will work, definitely would need to modify the cut out for the caliper. He did not try to install the backing plate as he is running 8.00 on the mains and a 7.00 on the nose.
I checked his hangar yesterday but the airplane is out working for a while and I don't know when it will be back to try and get photos.

Not sure if I did the photo thing correctly....First photo is with 8.50x10 main, 8.00 nose, on Montague Island.
Second photo is with 29" on main, 8.50 on nose.
You can see height difference by looking at step on landing strut between photos

Thanks seward! I assume that is Landes/Airglas nose fork?

Re: Cessna 182 29x10 Upgrade

Great pics - I could probably live with either solution for my needs.

8.5s seem good enough.

Thanks,
