Cessna 182 nosewheel fork for big tires
Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

182 STOL Driver,
Do you know if the 411 nose fork is the same as the 310 nose fork. If so you said you are using 7.00 on the front and it has enough clearance? That is what I would like to do...I have a 310 fork and called the FSDO office in Helena and they said if I could get a copy of a FA that would help. Any possibility I could get you to Fax me a copy of your FA's on the setup you have? Thanks for your help Brian Fax 406-375-0676

If you have a 310 fork then you have a 206 fork. Just shave off the two little attach points for the fenders that 310's have and your fork is now indistinguishable from a 206 fork. A 206 fork is the large fork for a 182. Install using a logbook entry referring to the optional fork and tires in the 182's equipment list. Problem solved. The nose tire is a 6.00x6. A 7.00 would be a tight fit but might work, although not an option on the equipment list. Pics here.

Thanks for the info. I recently talked with another pilot who did the same thing, however pre 1960 182's did not have that option so I think I still need a FA. I will probably just do a 6.00 on front and 8.00 on the mains. I just wanted to toy with the option of a 7.00 front and 8.50 mains, but it probably is not much difference. Thank you

I've used both 6.00 and 7.00's on the mains of my Bo. The size difference is very small, maybe an inch in height.

On the other 182B we had 600 up front and 700's for mains. On soft surfaces, the 700's are way better than 600's. By May I will be running the same configuration on my current 182B.
Just about all the 206's that do it for a living in Idaho use a 600 on the nose and 800's for mains. You need to remember that a loaded 206 weighs quite a bit more than an early 182 fully loaded. 700's on the mains is a realy good compromise.

I believe I have found what I need to get FA from Helena. I talked with a man named Bob at the FSDO office and I hope I am able to do what others have done already. After my search I understand why people go with the Landis fork as it is easier to get. When I get a FA if any one needs a copy I will be happy to send it to you. I had no intention of creating hard feelings or using this site to cause contention. I love to fly and am happy to learn from all of you who have experience and ideas I do not have. I have no hard feelings toward anyone, I just want bigger tires on my plane, and did not intend to be misunderstood. I talked with a friend of mine who works for Alaskan Bush Wheels today. He gave me some options and gave me a lot of good advice about my 182. I will let you know what happens with my fork and wheels. Thanks Brian.

Yes I got it a number of years ago. It didn't work quite as I thought it would. I got almost to the end of the FA and things went dormant. The local FSDO office had some change of policy or something like that. A year or so later I received a call from the local A/P I use who was aware of my desire to get a FA for the heavy duty fork saying that he thought he could get it done because of another recent change. He put everything together and I had an FA in hand a couple of weeks later. I am happy to send you a copy as a reference or get you in contact with the A/P and you can ask him anything you like. As for the discussion of the tire size...I think they all have pros and cons (6 front 8 mains is standard size for "heavy duty" on a 206 and 182) I run this configuration and haven't been kept out of places I want to go in the Idaho Backcountry but a trike has its limitations from what everyone says. I have a friend who doesn't have a FA and doesn't seem to care and he runs the 7 front 850 mains and it is quite a bit taller...The 7 just barely clears the sides of the fork. If you do the landis option you can go big up front like 850. Happy to help in anyway. I personally like the 6 with 8's on the mains. If I went with bigger tires maybe I could go some of the real tricky places...but as for now I am content with where I am able to fly. All the best..

Bringing up a thread from the dead.
I have a customer with a C-182E model that bought a P/N 5042013-497 heavy duty nose gear strut and fork for a Cessna 310 or 421B twin that he would like to install. I have been doing all sorts of research and his new nose fork is not one of the ones listed in the C-182 parts manual as an optional fork. So I will need a field approval on this.
There are several mentions earlier on this thread of guys that have F/A's using the 310 fork. Hopefully someone here still has a copy of their 337 that they can send me. My local FSDO guy will do a FA for me if I have a previous one to reference. He has already done several others that way and is way easy to work with.
