Backing the RPM off in cruise is a big help. Cruise on some props for example still generates a lot of noise! Slow it down, run over square, if necessary and help out on reducing noise. Backing off manifold pressure doesn’t reduce noise much, its slowing down RPM that reduces noise.
Just a simple easy thing that could go a long way in helping.

I am almost always at the bottom of the green arch. That is 2200 RPM for me. Higher RPM at takeoff or have to get over something. My attitude is that I like it slow so I can look at the great outdoors.

It was one of the experiences that made me so sour on backcountry etiquette (that and getting shot at by some pilots and the 5-ship carbon cub air show and the practice takeoffs and landings in the Frank at 7am, all within about 7 days of each other).

FWIW, Alturas is the big ass lake on the other side of the most obvious pass coming up the canyon on a straight line from Boise to Smiley Creek (basically Boise > Atlanta > Smiley Creek takes you right over Alturas. Try not to do that.
I get where you’re coming from.
That would irritate the hell out of me too!!
We all gots to get along and airplane noise is just as annoying as snowmachines and dirt bikes! Unless of course I’m the one twisting/pushing the throttle [emoji16]

I sense a thread hijack here. Just be considerate and do not be disappointed that everybody cannot be pleased. There will always be one crybaby. Maybe two.

To help keep down the noise I will be fixing my own breakfast Saturday morning

IMPORTANT UPDATE ON THE STRAIGHT-TAIL FLY-IN

Hey Gang...just a small update on the Fly-In...

Due to the requirement of the Smiley Creek Lodge to have a committment from me not later than May 29 for the fixed-price barbecue on Saturday evening, and seeing that the weather has been pretty crappy (we're in the transition from a wet May to a typically dryer June), I've decided to cancel our request for the barbecue. The Lodge opens officially on June 5 and they will be available for breakfast, lunch and dinner as each person chooses from Friday on. I didn't want to risk a weather cancellation of the event or of people deciding not to come at the last minute and me subsequently getting the bill for the dinner event.

We will be monitoring the weather closely and hoping for a serious drying out trend by the first of June. If anyone has any questions please call, text or write.

Re: Cessna 182 Straight-Tail Fly-In

If I can get out of work early enough I'll be up Friday night, if not I'll be up Saturday morning for sure. I live and work just over the hill from Smiley so it'd be inexcusable not to show up... even if I have the incorrect tail on my 182

Hey there CParker...thanks for writing...

It's with great pain I have to say that it's looking more like we might have to postpone the Fly-In for weather. It's beautiful now and will be into Wednesday next week but the 5-7th is forecast to be really crappy. I'll make an announcement on Sunday or Monday based on a better forecast. The forecast for the 12th-14th looks beautiful so we may just push it back a week. This is the first I've mentioned this online. I've been holding off...

Re: Cessna 182 Straight-Tail Fly-In

****** Cessna 182 Straight-Tail Fly-In Update ******

The bad news...based on the 7-day weather forecast for the weekend of June 5-7 we are postponing the Fly-In to the following weekend...June 12-14.

The forecast for the original weekend is lousy with a combination of rain showers, thunder storms and snow showers. The temperature will also be dropping from the 70's and 80's we are currently experiencing to the low 50's during the day and freezing at night.

This is disappointing for me and I know many people are making their summer plans in June and may not be able to attend a week later. However I've had pilots mail me who are traveling long distances and have said it's not worth the long flight for marginal weather. I completely agree. The weather for the weekend of June 12-14 is forecast to be back up into the 70's with clear skies. Once again, this could change but I wanted everyone to know now that it won't be held on the weekend of June 5-7. This is the nature of weather in the Idaho Backcountry and I hope most of you are flexible enough in your schedules to accommodate the new date. I hate to see anyone who really wants to attend not be able to. On the other hand, I can't stick to a plan that may compromise the safety of anyone trying to get there. The experience level of those attending runs from 100 hour pilots to those with many thousands of hours. I think everyone will be safely challenged and richly rewarded by getting to experience our amazing State.

All details of the event remain the same. Firewood and coffee will be available as well as an informal potluck on Saturday evening for those interested in attending. The plan is to gather on Friday evening at 6:00 for introductions and information at the pavilion. That will leave time for those who want to fly afterward.

Praying for CAVU... Phil

****** Cessna Straight-Tail Fly-In ***** / TEE-SHIRT SAMPLE

This has been a little challenging for me as I knew nothing about designing T-Shirts and having them made. However, I figured that a Fly-In really isn't complete unless you come away with a T-Shirt as a reminder that you were there and to remind you to go back! Ya, know "Been there, Got the T-Shirt". Even those who can't attend are welcome to purchase one to celebrate your 182!

So the design is complete and I've attached the sample. There will be either men's or women's shirt styles to choose from, the size of your choice. I will have a sample of the exact brand of shirt at the Fly-In in men's XL and women's M for sizing. There will be a choice between 2 different color shirts for each gender. Only 2 because most colors don't look that great with the yellow in the graphic. Yea, I know...I'm a black T-shirt guy too but I'm gonna make an exception here. After all, it is summer. There will be the main graphic on the shirt back and the black line drawing on the front left pocket area.

A cool point of interest is this...the 182 in the graphic is the #1 Cessna 182 built. The shirts will be under $30 and include shipping if you all will buy enough of them. So, if you like this then plan to bring cash or a personal check and there will be a sign-up sheet.

Thanks for the compliments on the shirt! I had the idea in my head and the shirt design guy put it down in Corel Draw. Sheeeshhh. Haven't heard of that program 15 years.

I did a little recon over to Smiley Creek this AM to meet the caretakers and make sure everything is there that we need for the Fly-In next week. All is excellent! New date...June 12-14 (delayed from this weekend for weather coming in for a few days). Photo is from my friend's back deck, just up the road from Smiley.

Re: Cessna 182 Straight-Tail Fly-In

******Attention Straight-Tail Cessna182 Fly-In Participants******

This has been a difficult process, trying to out-guess the weather for the Sawtooth Valley and the Smiley-Creek area over the last 10 days. It turned out to be an excellent decision to postpone the Fly-In this past weekend. Who would have thought people would be driving up to Bogus Basin out of Boise on June 7th to make snowmen! The runway at Smiley Creek had snow a couple times over the last 5 days but it quickly melted as the ground is no longer frozen. So what's up for this coming weekend? I'm gonna throw this info out there folks and let you guys give me your input but I just got off the phone with our local news meteorologist/pilot and I'm leaning toward postponing the Fly-In until the weekend of June 26-28.

The forecasts are pretty consistent that Thurs/Fri this week will be nice in the Smiley Creek area with temps reaching 80 deg. However, beginning Friday evening showers may begin with a chance of T-storms Friday night and into Saturday. Sunday, more of the same. With these showers will come wind. I've attached a typical forecast as of today, Tuesday AM. This particular one from NOAA. From Monday on next week the forecast looks good with temperatures rising again after a cooling over the weekend. From the attached report you can see that the weather looks good on either side of the weekend. How bad will the weekend be? It looks like we will be able to get into Smiley Creek easily on Thurs/Fri but maybe have limited flying and exploring opportunities over Sat and Sun. Some rain is a given. There's no way that we want to cancel this event but as I said above, we do have another opportunity to move it to June 26-28, betting on the likelihood of much better weather. The State airport director has graciously given us that spot. The weatherman said the jet stream should have moved more north by then and high pressure and more stable air will be moving up from the south.

I'd like to hear feedback from everyone who is planning to attend as to whether we want to postpone again or give this weekend our best shot. I know many people have other plans as we get fully into summer but then again, maybe a 3-day getaway will still be possible. It's not just my call. I've tried to stay on top of this and get as much input as possible. This is an event that everyone should feel comfortable about attending, especially those traveling a long distance. I was anticipating maybe 30 aircraft based on the feedback I've been getting and the more the merrier. But if we only have 10 aircraft show up a lot of people will miss out on a great flying/camping experience. No one wants to get soaked in their backpack tent!

Having said that, the campground at Smiley is in wonderful condition and the setting is extraordinary. It deserves a good weather weekend to enjoy the majesty of the area.

*******************Straight-Tail 182 Fly-In******************

We’re still on for the 182 Straight-Tail Fly-In at Smiley Creek on June 26-28th after having to postpone twice. Looks like the weather is settling down in Idaho and we have a good forecast weather window for that weekend.

Hope to see all of you 1956-1959 antiques up there. I plan a little informal meeting and welcome at new pavilion around 6:00 PM. That will allow time afterward for those who want to enjoy a smooth evening flight.
