Cessna A185E floatplane cap 3000 STC

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Cessna A185E floatplane cap 3000 STC

Hi,

I am going to buy a set of cap3000 for my 1966 a185e. Obviously I guess I need an STC for that but don’t know how to get one. The company no longer exists..
is the only way to get one is to find someone with a 1966 a185e lol??

Your help or comments are welcome!

Thanks!!!

That’s a very good question, best to find who does sell it before you buy those floats. If the float seller has a copy that would be a good starting point

I have a copy. Also have a set of CAP 3000 I’d sell. Located near Calgary. Have a LSTC to remove the ventral fin for the CAP floats. If you don’t have the LSTC, make sure the floats include the ventral fin.

The ones i'm looking at are in very good condition for a good price near my place in Quebec. I'm pretty sure i'll go forward with it. The only problem is the STC and now I guess the LSTC as well since there is no ventral fin. What is LSTC? Cheers!

Last I heard the CAP float certificates were held by a company that was going to produce them in Watson Lake. That never happened, and it was a long time ago in any case.

As far as I know, CAP floats are orphaned now. I don't know how these things work in Canada, but I'd imagine you should be able to install them with some sort of approval, since they were and are certificated. I'd get in touch with your closest office of Transport Canada, and see what they have to say.

Good floats, by the way. Fastest floats on a 185 by a ways. Not a lot of reserve buoyancy, but if you use some common sense, they're plenty big enough.

Limited STC. Basically just a one time STC for one specific aircraft. But you can use the paperwork to get it for another similar aircraft.

Re: Cessna A185E floatplane cap 3000 STC

I had a set of almost new CAP 3000E's on my 1974 185 years ago. I had a lot of Edo 2960 experience before buying this CAP equipped airplane. I have to say, other that Aerocets which are as close to perfect as one could probably get the CAP's were my favorite float. I loved them. They took a while to learn but after a few hours and an open mind one can really come to appreciate and fly these floats well. They do have their quirks like all floats do but I found ways to overcome those issues and use them to their full potential. Good luck to you finding paperwork, these floats are worth the effort.
