Hotrod, is this impossible for you to do? The only time I've had trouble is if I'm trying to talk to somebody while I'm pouring and not paying attention.

Probably a good idea to use a Mr. Funnel to keep moisture out from cans, anyway, right?

For sure. I tried filling it with straight water once and it holds----kind of amazing.

Re: Cessna Killer Caps Solutions?

I don't use a funnel now, & don't really have to use one. I'm fueling from 5 gallon cans filled at the gas station, generally used within a week or less of filling, and I'm not too worried about water. If I was filling cans from a 55 gallon drum out in the bush, it'd be a different story.

Using the funnel, looks like you'd have to hoist the cans & keep them hoisted while draining? Don't really wanna have to do that. Now, I just stick the nozzle of the can down into the tank neck & lay the gas can down on the wing while it drains. Often I'm filling both sides at the same time.

Has anyone here with Monarch caps ever flown away with the caps off, and had the anti-siphon flapper save their ass?

Cessna Killer Caps Solutions?

These are what my hanger buddy uses on his RV-9a. They work great for his plane as far as no spill and leave it and forget it...so to speak. Next time I'm at the hanger ( later this week), I'll try to grab one and see if they are long enough to push the flap open. The top one is what he has.

Those are sweet jugs Cory. Are the spouts strong enough to support the jug without you holding them though? The nice thing about a flexible spout is you just set the can on the wing after inserting the spout and it does its thing. It allows you to have a can going in each wing at the same time.

Cessna Killer Caps Solutions?

They sure are. My buddy comes in, pops one in each wing, and goes about his business. Fuel doesn't flow until they are popped down after being inserted, and auto shutoff when full. No spills. And both wings are fueled to the same level.

Re: Cessna Killer Caps Solutions?

If I've got a minute, I'll see if I can play with them when I do my oil change this week and see if they will work with the Monarchs.

Re: Cessna Killer Caps Solutions?

Gary (shortfielder) PM'd me & suggested that I try a "simple siphon" or similar-- looks like that'd work well with the Monarch caps. I googled it and found a set of two 3.5 gpm "shaker siphons" with 6' hose for about $15 delivered-- one for everyday use in the hangar & one to stash in the airplane for emergencies. Not sure how they are about leaving gas in the bottom of the can though.

Re: Cessna Killer Caps Solutions?

The link to the gas cans available from Jegs appears to be broken. Can someone repost please?

If that doesn't work, just go to jegs.com and search for spill free jugs.

Let us know how that works out-----sticking the tip in the Monarch and walking away. Looks interesting and opposite from a dish washing detergent bottle.

Re: Cessna Killer Caps Solutions?

The key, obviously, is if they are long enough to keep the flap open. Hopefully I'll have enough time Thursday or Friday to find out.

Cessna Killer Caps Solutions?

Ok, I made it to the hanger today and here is what I found. The nozzle is long enough to open the flap a little less than a quarter I'm guessing. With the fuel flow and it open that much, I would think that should work. I didn't try running fuel through it. Also, I stood the jug up to check for balance, and it appears it should be fine. Even with the chain, it was solid. Here are some pics. I hope this helps!

Re: Cessna Killer Caps Solutions?

No problem. I usually don't buy fuel at my home airport, but if the circumstances warrant and the jugs are empty, maybe I'll try refueling a few gallons with one to see how it works.

Re: Cessna Killer Caps Solutions?

Those of you fueling from cans without filtration of some kind may be sorely disappointed at some point in future. The Mr. Funnel provides some level of filtration.

I have had totally "clean" cans introduce some water and/or sediments that the funnel caught. I have no idea how that stuff got there, but......clean fuel is far too important to cut corners.

And, yes, I have flown away with a gas cap in my pocket, but not in one of these airplanes. I know a couple pilots who left a cap off a 185 with the old style caps, then took off. Ran out of gas ten miles short of the airport, landed on a road.......fortunately. The Monarch flapper would probably have prevented that episode from being an issue by keeping the fuel in the tank. They'd ported ALL the gas out of both tanks through that one fuel port.

Also, I had the flapper hinge pin work out of it, and drop the flapper into the bottom of the tank. I managed to scrounge around in there and find the thing, and get it re-installed. I flew with these things several thousand hours, so a rare happening, but worth a visual check of the pin position during fueling.

FWIW.

Re: Cessna Killer Caps Solutions?

If the cans were totally "clean", there's a good chance the contaminants were introduced to the fuel beforehand. With that in mind, maybe we should all be using a Mr Funnel even when gassing at the airport 100LL pump? I don't see too many people doing that.
