Chicken Strip Death Valley experts

I landed at Chicken Strip once many years ago in Early March. I have to head to So Cal from South West Idaho April 30th. Thinking of landing there late morning, camping, being at one with what goes on, and leaving early next morning. Am just wondering if it will be too hot.

What ever happened to Desert Rat that was on here many years ago. He knew a lot about that neck of the woods.

Re: Chicken Strip Death Valley experts

You might get a window of decent temps through April. Watch forecast.

Re: Chicken Strip Death Valley experts

High temps will be 85-95, lows about 60. Should be about the same as Furnace Creek, which has good weather reporting.

I've been there 6 times. I think you will be ok. The Maule would get out even at 85.

Re: Chicken Strip Death Valley experts

I've been in multiple times this past winter/spring. The strip is in fine shape.
There have been a couple times already this spring that the temps have been over 100 degrees in the afternoons, but it can vary based on the current weather systems. Very common to make 90's in the day and 60 overnight this time of year. Wind can get crazy....
"at the drop of a hat" this time of year. Take your tie-down stakes and ropes.... not "The Claw" system, it's worthless in Saline Valley.
Best to not overfly or buzz the spring sources as well.

I recommend you review the actual location of the Chicken Strip prior to arriving on site. It's easily viewable on Google Earth.
Approximately a half mile Northwest from the palm trees & willows of the Lower Warm Spring source.
You do not want to attempt to land on the long time decommissioned "Tail Dragger Strip" that is +- 1/4 mile South of the Lower Spring Source.

Just a couple weekends back, a Glass Air II Pilot decided that was his landing choice..... poor planning & poor decision with poor results.
Did not have any clue as to where the Chicken trip was.... Just watched the Juan Brown/Blancoliero You Tube and was on his way.

Re: Chicken Strip Death Valley experts

I'm in Owens Valley tonight and am planning to check on Stovepipe Wells in the morning. I also wanted to check on Chicken Strip but yesterday someone told me it is closed due to flood ruts from last spring.

Does anyone have a recent update on the condition of Chicken Strip?

Met a couple here at Escalante today who flew over Chicken strip in A Husky yesterday. They said heavily rutted from floods and definitely unlandable

I overflew CS Monday. The washouts are not that bad. (Zoom images to see detail.) There are 14 coming to the work crew so it'll get fixed. See you there!

Re: Chicken Strip Death Valley experts

Head's up on a new restricted area R 2511--by NOTAM in advance only--that closes the Trona corridor from 6,000 MSL to 20,000 MSL https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2022/10/20/2022-22783/establishment-of-restricted-area-r-2511-trona-ca. AOPA and others opposed it, but it's final now.

The Navy says they only plan on using it maybe 36 times/year for a couple of hours per time, during weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., so the odds of it being active when I'm in the area are low. Flying the corridor below 6,000 MSL can be rough unless it's a calm morning, so beware and check NOTAMs if you're planning a trip that needs the corridor.

I'll be driving to the work party.

Great job! Chicken Strip is now in the best shape it's been in some time. Enjoyable weekend. Made some great acquaintances. There was a group photo taken, which I don't yet have. Hopefully someone will post it here soon.

Driving in there and then home today REALLY made me appreciate the ability to fly in!

Re: Chicken Strip Death Valley experts

Mike was the hero of the weekend, trailering a heavy steel drag up from SoCal behind his one-ton truck. That, along with the smaller resident drag, made short work of runway grading. A small amount of hand shoveling and filling low spots, and moving rocks to make ripraps, and we were done by early Saturday afternoon.

Shout out to Sierra Splitter: I'll keep an eye on Barnstormers for you!

Had to add these pics. A weak attempt to capture the remote desert beauty.

Monty comes across as a serious, sincere young man with a real vision for Lone Pine Airport. I can get behind that! I'll drop him a line as well. Maybe see y'all down there.
