My 180 is fairly well equipped. GNS480, MX20, SL30 and more. But the thing that takes most of the stress away is a autopilot. Would not want to be in IMC without it.

Dunno about the "programmed r-nav route" bit,
but a gps can be wired to the G5 to drive the HSI display.
Even a lowly 196 will work.
I believe the G5 can then in turn drive an otto pilot.

In case you don't already have it, here's a link to the 100-plus page G5 users manual.
FWIW they don't give you a hard copy when you buy the instrument, you have to download it.
It should hopefully answer any more questions you have.

It's an interesting part of the STC. We can actually use a portable GPS connected to the G5, which can then command the GFC500 to follow the magenta line. This wasn't just the avionics companies figuring out a new angle to argue with the FAA. The FAA position on this matter has softened from granite to the point of complete mush. A huge safety enhancement for the average VFR private operation. Let's hope that not too many stretch the limitations, and spoil it for us all.

Its sounds like the Wiz-bang techs in the avionics shop should be able to derive lateral guidance from a simple SL60 to the G5. Not looking for massive RNAV programming capability just simple track guidance between to known or user waypoints on the EHSI instead of constant reference back to SL60. I have no plans to incorporate an autodriver I get enough of that in the "other" office. Thanks to all for the input, cheers.

I believe its a one-wire connection fron nav source to G5.
I did get the info for connecting my garmin 196,
unfortunately Ive misplaced it.

Garmin has revised the manual 7x in 2017, so when performing an actual installation it is advisable to check for latest revision on their main website at Garmin.com >Products >Aviation >Indicators & Interfaces >G5 Electronic Flight Instrument for Certificated Aircraft >Manuals (under "Related").

Also under "Related" is software, as of today showing Ver 5.00 dated Dec 19, 2017, which took me less than 10 minutes upload into my G5.

Upload was via a MicroSD "card" inserted in the front of said G5 just above the fastener hole. MicroSD is adjacent the dime, with standard SD size adapter shown above.

Tip: Download direct to MicroSD (via adapter if necessary). I originally tried downloading file to a folder hoping to transfer to MicroSD at my leisure, but all I got was an error message during transfer attempt.

Most of the "current" laptops have a provision to receive a standard size SD card holder that in turn can accommodate a microSD card some of which can hold upwards of 120 plus giggle bites.
