CloudAhoy app

CloudAhoy is a pretty neat app that was written up in the July '12 copy of Flying magazine. I just got around to trying it today. Basically you load it on your phone, press start, and it logs your flight. When you get back into a service area, it uploads your data to the CloudAhoy server. You can log onto the CloudAhoy website and view your whole flight in Google Earth. There are lots of filters and formats for debriefing flights and approaches. A fun one for sharing with friends is "Cockpit View", under the "Timeline" tab. It flies you around your flight track in Google Earth. You can also look left, right, and straight down as you virtually fly around. If I've actually got this figured out, then here is an example from messing around Denali's north country today.

Cheers,

-DP

Re: CloudAhoy app

So it appears to me that if you have your information in their site and you do anything stupid??? not that anyone on this site would, it would be out there in the internet private but maybe not environment, does the gummerment sponsor this site??
Kinda like face recognition on face book, and Google will have a record of your flight for future reference??
Do I really want to do that??
Did I say that out loud??
Not me!!!!!!
Any way just a thought??

Good questions... According to their site:

Q: What about privacy?
A: the abbreviated answer is that your information and flight data will never be disclosed to anyone outside of CloudAhoy (and its contractors who are bound by written obligations of confidentiality), unless you agreed to it, or CloudAhoy is required to disclose information by law. For the complete answer, please read the Privacy Policy in the signup page.

I'm to lazy to read the Privacy Policy. My guess is that you are probably safe from other's getting hold of the data on a normal basis, but you might not want to log if you know in advance that you are going to do "something stupid", because you uncle could probably get the info if it involved the courts. My 2 cents.

Re: CloudAhoy app

So if you're bootlegging to villages, don't press start. Duh.

If you find yourself upside down on a gravel bar, disable the upload functionality.

Also, it says it only acknowledges flights between designated airports. I haven't yet tried, but if you're landing and taking off off-airport, it may not even recognize that as a flight.

I WASN'T TRYING TO BE A SMART ASS!! [-X
Just if you had been flying around for a year or so putting all your flights on this and sharing them, and then if you do happen to land on that gravel bar upside down, or if you happen to have to park it somewhere because of weather and bend it, or if someone violates you for flying to low, close to something, or god forbid you plug into a mountain and wreck it completely, and the FAA or the insurance Co. tell you because of your past history they are going to screw you, you don't have much recourse if there is a record of past bad judgement, or flying to low, or in bad weather. :^o
Might not be the place to show where you flew under the bridge??
Would have loved it showing where we used to land on the glaciers in the past.
It is a great app, no doubt about it, and would be great to share for some. =D>
I was just trying to say, kinda like showing the video's of JC and some other not real smart things some of us do??
I just don't want some one to hang there selves!! [-o<

I've used it and landed where there was "no pavement, no airport" and it worked fine. Great app.

I know. :P I appreciate your caution. Some days of flying are like having a really hot mistress; if you're smart, you keep your mouth shut no matter how much you might feel like bragging. :-$

Definitely not! The other item in the privacy policy says that you can turn off the sharing links at any time, and all existing sharing links, like the one in my OP above, will cease to work. You can also delete your past flight logs from their server. Whether they can be recovered I don't know.

The app creators promote this thing as a training/ debrief tool. For instance, you can look at your flight track and overlay it with an approach, and see how closely you flew it. I think that flying through terrain in Google Earth could be a pretty neat souvenir to give to someone you just took up, like a young eagle for instance.

Cheers,
