Coffee tech

I'm sure to get some shit for this one. I can already hear you diehard macho guys out there cracking your knuckles, getting ready to post about how real men only drink coffee black, end of story.

Well, if being a "real" man means I have to substitute my morning 1% latte with something else while plane/car camping, then I guess I'm a girlie man... :D

I like to add about 2.5 shots of espresso made with either dark espresso roast or a dark french roast to about 5 oz of heated and frothed milk. I guess it's kind of a latte/cappucino hybrid.

I got one of these for christmas:

Laroma stovetop espresso maker:

It's just a tiny thing but i can use it on the range top or on a MSR Whisperlite. No electricity required. It doesn't quite make real espresso...more of a super strong coffee that is strong enough to get a good latte flavor from, although it has to be brewed with low-to-medium heat. I go about 4-5 on the range dial and it takes 10 minutes.

Highly recommended.

There's also these little guys, popular with backpackers:

I haven't had the chance to use one yet though.

Wait a min

I got one something like that in the Scout. Its a 1968 percolator

I use it when I have to preheat, I plug the hot plate into the Honda and in 20 min fresh coffee

Then I mix the grounds up with Banana for lunch or an in flight snack.

We could probably have some of it at Johnson Creek, if you would show up.

John;

You sure you want to be in the air at the same time as a coffee deprived caffeine junkie?

Damn, I know. I may as well have told them I wear women's undies.

But seriously.

A good latte is unbeatable. Fourbucks usually screws them up, that is why the homebuilts are a must.

If you DO insist on black, this Laroma will make a cup that will straighten and then re-curl your chest hair.

I got your back Zane...best thing I've found for throwing in the pack/plane to satisfy the fix is a small french press. Won't do lattes of course, but it will brew up killer Jet A. Warm some milk too and the au laits are pretty good. The lexan models are light and pretty tough.

I figure you could just fill the gascolator with coffee grounds and some water, plug in the sump heater and there you have it kinda like one of those Tassimo brewers, one cup at a time.

If you fly as often as i have lately you could just keep water in the fuel tanks and rig up a timer so the coffees ready when you get to your tie down

A friend gave me one of those little espresso makers years ago. Since I don't drink coffee, I've used it once, maybe twice, making drinks for others. Reactions were mixed. Kinda like when I gave them freeze dried ice cream. :-&

I'll try to bring it along for comparison if we ever end up at a fly-in together.

It's a finicky lil bastard. You have to have the coffee jedi arts dialed in, or yeah, it can be less than stellar.
