Comm static when receiving “Help”

Plane I bought a little over a month ago. Full Garmin G3X system and comm is a GTR20.

I am picking up static to the point that it’s hard to hear sometimes. When close by the static does not seem to be nearly as bad but just a few miles away and the static is almost as loud as the person talking.

I have removed all grounds and made sure they were clean and tight. I have pulled the alternator breaker without any change.

It’s a quick popping noise that is definitely rpm related as I can get it to pop faster and slower with rpm.

When engine is not running the traffic is 100% clear.

The engine has two EFII electronic ignitions. Does not have magnetos.

I can’t figure out what is causing this static. I have also removed each plug cap and made sure I am getting a solid snap onto the plug. I did the same on the opposite end of the wires going into the ignitions.

Only has about 140 hrs on equipment as it was all brand new when aircraft was built.

Do you have any of those plugs that go in the 12 volt/cigarette receptacles....I had same conditions after I put in one of those and hooked up an IPad.... I was ready to cancel a flight as I couldn’t hear a thing...cycled all as you did...by chance pulled the plug...and glorious silence...those cheap Chinese converters are Dangerous...!

I second the power port receptacle.

My new 182 has panel mount USB ports. I never caught it on my test flight. But when I took delivery the next week and flew home, I needed to charge my phone. Let me tell you, that was worst static I ever heard. Couldn’t talk to ATC, no clue if I ever stepped on anyone because I could only hear “SQWEEEHEHEEEHHEHESHHEEESHWEE” coming through both of my radios.

Not ideal, but I’m glad it’s fixed. It was driving me super insane.

The charging cable can also do it. Ive had many sheep cables give feedback through the radio when more costly ones don't.

PilotRyan, was it a stratus Aero usb or something else? I’d like a panel mount usb charger but am staying with portable batteries. Had a lighter usb give a lot of noise as well.

Re: Comm static when receiving “Help”

Hey guys sorry I was not active in my post. I just got back from ID. Was up there for a few weeks.
I tried separating all my sensitive electronics grounds from my more dirty electronics. No better.
End result after talking with Robert from EFII was to switch to high resistance carbon core plug wires. I ordered up the mit from summit racing and was able to custom cut them for a super clean install.

Went up for a flight and my comm is crystal clear. Actually one of the best I’ve ever heard. Working 100% now.

The best part is being experimental I was able to order up top quality wire harness with all the boots and clips for a whopping $37 shipped. Love the price difference compared to when I was flying certified.
