Continental I0 470

Hello All
I need a Continental I0 470 S for my Cessna 210
Being on a fixed income of sorts, I am limited so does anyone know what letter suffixes also work?
I believe an I0 470 D can be modified
What about I0 470 C?
Or L, VO or M?
Can someone help please.

Re: Continental I0 470

The TCDS explains the differences between the model # suffixes.

Re: Continental I0 470

Might be worth calling an engine shop and asking them. A good shop should be willing to help you out, especially since they'll probably end up selling a few parts to change the designation...

Since you are the airplane owner, it would behoove you to go to faa.gov where for free you can download the TCDS for your airframe (posted by akaviator above), engine, etc. They have all the ADs posted and all kinds of other good stuff for your downloading pleasure.

The TCDS won't help him with the engine suffixes. For example, can you take a D model, change the pan, filler neck, induction and make it a S? Thats all engine info and the aircraft TCDS won't help with that. Sure it will tell you if you can use a certain suffix, but won't help him to convert an engine from one suffix to another, which if I understand his original post is what he is wondering.

Re: Continental I0 470

Thanks guys
I'll call an engine shop.
Any additional info would be great.
I emailed TCM but it wasn't productive.

Sorry I don't have a better answer for you. I could help with 520s as I went through a similar thing a few months ago on them, but don't know the IO 470 as well.

Re: Continental I0 470

Engines and propellers have TCDS (Type Certificate Data Sheets) also. They show the differences between models on the same Type Certificate in the notes.

Here's a link. https://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guid ... enDocument
Should be able to use a D, E, or M if your intake is good from your current S.
It doesn't show all the differences. I opened the IO 520 one and it does list some differences, but not all of them. This is where an engine shop would come in handy to fill in the blanks such as oil pan difference or oil fill tube differences.

Re: Continental I0 470

If he needs more info on the model suffixes than what the TCDS note provides, simply look in the Continental IPC and compare the effectivity codes. The OP is the airplane owner and he should have copies of the IPCs. If not, they are not expensive. Textron allows free pdf download for the airframe and I Continental does something similar.

It's the type certificate data sheet. The original approved engine(s) are in there. If you can't read it, I'm sure your mechanic can.

So I saw a 210B a while ago that had a I0 520 in it but I couldn't find an STC
It seems an I0 520 would be a better engine and make it a better airplane with a longer TBO
Thoughts?

I think that would he a great way to go, and I think a 520 may be easier to get your hands on. You will most likely need to do a field approval though. I think there's a guy on here that has done the field approval onto a 210/5(205), but that might help you get approval for your 210.

You never said why you need an engine.
Is your 210 without an engine?
Did you blow the engine that's in there?
Etc?

Converting another model of IO470 is fine,
but it might be cheaper & easier to just fix what you have--
esp if it involves tearing down the different engine,
and/or significant paperwork

So.........
The saying goes "there are those that have and those that will"....... experience engine failure.
I landed on a road with a hole in the side of my engine and oil all over my windscreen.
Thanks be to God Almighty for guiding me safely down.

Re: Continental I0 470

I had the same thing happen to me in my old C170--
broke a connecting rod, punched a hole in the case.
A major overhaul, replacing the case, rods, & cam,
and I was back in business.
Even just a data plate can be overhauled.
