The DC-9 didn't get my attention, the Saab 2000 did. So does Pen-Air have 2000's now? Seems like a neat airplane from what I know about it. Fast! The small jet killed it like the 707 and Dc-8 killed the Electra.

I could have my models mixed up- all these types constitute "big Iron" for me- but I think that Saab 2000 is what Pen-Air intends to start flying out to Adak in the coming 12 months. I've done that trip a few times on AS 737's and 737 combis, and each time TSA agents have to fly from ANC out to ADK, set up their folding card table, wand all of a dozen passengers, pack up their card table, and fly back to ANC with the dozen pax. Turns out the Saab 2000 is a couple of feet shorter than the length threshold that requires TSA screening, so by Pen taking over the route on behalf of Alaska, they won't have to mess with screening any more. My friend on Adak was in the process of getting approved as a TSA screener, but that looks moot now. Not sure, but the same efficiency probably applies to other current Alaska routes as well. FYI I'm told Alaska mileage plans will still apply.
The ironic thing is Adak may be one of the few destinations where screening is actually warranted, with the amount of old ordnance laying around the island.

I flew out to Adak once to fix a broken Conquest II for Pen-Air and was met by the "Original TSA" as soon as my feet hit the ground. A very big MP w/gun to let me know exactly what I could and could not do while there on the island. His message was crystal clear!

Port Angeles in western WA is courting airlines to come provide scheduled service to Seattle.
(I think it's a losing proposition myself, as several airlines have proven, but that's besides the point) One of the carriers supposedly in the running is PenAir. Don't know what other equipment they might have, but from what I've read they would be flying Saab 340's for this route.

I've heard it said that Anchorage isn't really in Alaska, but you can see it from there.
The OP's photo makes me think of that.

I have a buddy that works for PenAir and they are getting 5 Saab 2000s, they are currently in the approval phase. I believe they will be online soon, 340s will be phased out of AK and sent to the lower 48 bases and there will be all 2000s in AK.
