Cougar Ranch Landing

Flew into the new strip on the Middle Fork. Cougar Ranch. I had already hiked in to get a close look but I had never seen anyone land there. Pireps were nonexistent.
It was a nice cool morning and I was very light on fuel. Got an early start on a pretty smoky day.

The early time makes for a dark shady video but it worked ok.

The approach requires a bit of juking and it “lands” a little shorter than the 1400 discussed length. The takeoff was easier. I’d be very reluctant heavier, hotter and in windy conditions.

Re: Cougar Ranch Landing

Nice! Thanks for the little tour.

I hope to get in there this fall for some hiking in the area.

Nicely done Mike. Does it slope slightly downhill at the beginning of the runway? Is that what you mean by it landing shorter?

Thanks for posting this Mike, i was kinda hoping you'd do a video in there. I don't think I'll be taking the 172 in any time soon

Re: Cougar Ranch Landing

Well, when I first looked at it, I couldn’t tell which way I was going to take off. It almost appeared as if it was going uphill a bit going downstream.....counter to almost every other strip there.

Frankly, it’s effectively flat and after deciding to take off downstream, it wasn’t a big deal.

Probably not a good place to bring the whole family and their barbell collection though.

Re: Cougar Ranch Landing

Thanks Idahomike. We have been on nearly every strip back there but I don't remember seeing this one. Can you tell me where the strip is? Or just what two strips is it between.

Its on the other side of the river from Mahoney Creek, directly across to the south.

Re: Cougar Ranch Landing

I’d have one additional caution here. I don’t believe the strip will take much moisture before it becomes a quagmire. Lots of deep powdery dirt now will turn into mud pretty easily.
