Re: Crossing the pond for HSF 2015!!!

Would be awsome to see it from the air thought Im not sure I will have time! that said Im coming back in 2016 and making my way up to Alaska for Valdez so I may be able to do it then. I'm pretty keen to get to Las Vegas area as one of our other members who's been in hiding for a while, dog pilot, is talking about taking me for a fly over the grand canyon!

Not to worried about the driving part, Ive done a test itinerary and sort of split the drive up to a few 5 hour drives which for us we wouldn't blink an eye lid at. we get pretty used to 5 - 10 hour drives over here. I work out bush where I do 16 hour drive days to get out there so I'm pretty used to it. just need to get my head around the whole wrong side of the road thing!

The only thing I'm really spewing about is we will have to really drive past all the walks ect, but the drive looks and sounds amazing, and it seems there is no shortage of amazing look outs to stop at along the way!

Re: Crossing the pond for HSF 2015!!!

Well guys I've come up with a theoretical itinerary, the bit leading up to the HSF is completely Hypothetical, its just a possible idea to I know more about whats going on. However I would love peoples opinions on the trip after HSF from Reno to Vegas. any input people want to give I would be more than happy to take on board, I was just playing on google maps and click on what ever look interesting.

The biggest question I have is I have very limited time to spend (my trip in may to Valdez will be our bigger trip, this is just one of those "bloody hell those flights are cheap!" moments) but if there is one thing we don't have over here, its mountains, just what you would call speed humps. So I want to take as much of it in as possible and defiantly at least do the drive through Yosemite even if it is just a drive. So the question is in order for us to cross through Yosemite, we will need to cross over the range from east to west first, I have just picked the route that looks the nicest from google maps but is there a better option?

anyway, long story short, I've copied and pasted the rough itinerary below, and below that is the google maps link to the route I'm looking at taking at this stage. I know its alot of driving, But we don't really blink an eye lid at a 10 hour drive so we arnt really worried about that. We know we dont really have time to do it all properly so we sort of figured its the scenery we want to take in the most, so we are quite content with a senic drive holiday. Plus only 5 hours driving a day still leaves alot of time for short walks ect.

critique away fellas!

If the family doesn't come over with me, which has been the case due to school the last two years, I have plenty of extra room to bring you a full compliment of camping gear: tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, chair, etc. Just yell if you are still in need as it gets closer.

If you decide not to do the RV thing and need camping gear, I can lend you the following from my spares:

2-person tent
thermarest sleeping pad
sleeping bag
white gas stove and pots

Let me know if you need it and I can arrange to ship it to Rob - and you can ship it back to me at the end of your trip

Re: Crossing the pond for HSF 2015!!!

With all the camping gear being offered to me i could start a small tent city! Rob has been extremley generous and has not only offered to fly me over but offered camp gear aswell. But I would still like to thank everone for all the generosity theyve shown and I would ofcourse if any of you ever make the trip over here, the same will be extended back to you.

Its still months away but im really excited, cant wait to shake everyones hand! So what do you guys think of my route of chosen? Am i on a winner?

Re: Crossing the pond for HSF 2015!!!

If, as you say, you don't mind all that driving, then I think it's a great itinerary! High desert, Lake Tahoe, high Sierra passes, Yosemite, low desert (Death Valley), then Vegas baby! Temps in DV should be getting manageable by late Oct.

Sorry to hear you don't drink. I'm not sure what to do in Vegas Halloween night without drinking. (Just kidding. I'm sure you'll find a wild party to attend!)
