Cub Skis

WTB: The local Flying club is looking to replace the straight skis on their Cub. If anyone has any they are not using, or know of some for sale, please let me know. Thank you.

Re: Cub Skis

Which PA model is it? Would be interested to look on the type cert to see which exact skis are listed. Likely some Federal ice skate model

Re: Cub Skis

It is a PA12. The Club has been using Federal 2000's on this plane. During change-over cracking was observed on both skis, so it was decided it might be easier to buy another set of skis, rather than go through the repair process.

Re: Cub Skis

You have a few different options for skis. The table on the attached drawing lists your options.

Re: Cub Skis

I can't help you find skis. But that diagram of Federal skis brought back some memories of fun times in a Super Cub 20 years ago. A local and well-known CFI mentored me during my first year or so and lent me a set of Federal skis for three winters on the condition that I put new UHMW bottoms on, which I did. That led to 100 hours of ski flying around the Anchorage area, with a lot of learning along the way.

This is at Nancy Lake. Once I took my future wife to Shell Lake for lunch at the lodge. I landed on the groomed strip and taxied off only to look down and see the skis covered in water. Overflow! I threw the whip to that O-320 and luckily I had enough ooomph to get back out of it and into the air. Never did get that cheeseburger.

My mentor let me tag along one day during the Iditarod. We landed about a half dozen places in the valley before the racers got to Skwenta. My future wife was on that trip too. We'd land, watch the racers go by, and then move up a few miles into another spot to see them again. It was a gorgeous March day with blue skis, temps in the 20s, and light winds. Great day; one of the best days of flying I've ever had.

Seems like I had better adventures in those days! I wish you well in your search for skis. I'm sure it'll be worth it.
