Hey Tom, sorry you guys couldn't make it up, the wind has been pretty wild lately! I was down your way a few weeks back and got annihilated by turbulence crossing into the valley and had to turn around. G-meter readings were reaching scary levels and I was worried the wings might not stay attached.

I'm pumped for La Garita, such an awesome fly-in, I can hardly wait! I'm working on him already for it. He really wants to come! We started pulling the prop off the Helio tonight as it has a pretty good vibration.. the prop shop in Akron couldn't balance it on the plane and said it needs to be looked at/overhauled etc. We are trying to get it up there asap so it will be ready in time!! Take care,

On my Rotax, the propeller would not balance using the dynamic balancing procedure, the vibration problem ended up being in the gearbox. We would test it, put weights on the prop flange, test it again and it would be out of balance and need weight in a totally different place. the problem was due to wear in the gearbox.

I don't know if that is at all helpful for troubleshooting the geared propeller on the Helio, just throwing it out there...

Good point. Can't rule anything out. There really isn't any visible damage on his prop, so to think it couldn't be balanced on the plane seems a little strange. But who knows... Maybe that's why they wanted the prop off, could then verify it's not the issue and move on to the next thing! Hopefully we don't have to dig deeper than just the prop... I have to machine and weld up the tool to pull the nut holding it on. It's $1500 to buy that tool!! I bet I can make a nice one in 2 hours... crazy
