I think the weak link in the 31's is that they are stiff. These new tires are reported to have a much flexier sidewall AND a more durable wear surface, which is why they are going to be a much better option than the ABW.s RE: the brakes, not sure what you are referring to. Both the Gar Aero and the 10x10 ABW use the same disc.
At the show, Grove spoke of being on the cusp of making wheels for the 31's. These may have larger diameter discs, but that's out of my wheelhouse. All I can say is that I am running 29 ABWs and double pucks on my 1800 lb Wagon. When I land in the grass/gravel, I can already lock em up tight, so Im not sure what a larger disc would net me. (that said, I very rarely fly at or even near gross, so perhaps there may be a benefit...)
I'd be very skeptical of a company like Desser producing a multi compound tire... Anybody else remember when you could buy your Bushwheels in 3 different durometers? even then, when you could choose a different stiffness / durability of rubber, you couldn't get one that had differing compounds wishing the same tire...Of course, that was a lot of water under the bridge ago, and there is other technology to vary the felt stiffness of the tire, so maybe they can pull it off? Flexible sidewall, tougher wear surface, and no-shear valve stem would be a Bushwheel killer on it's own, coming from Desser, it would likely be more economical as well as being better... Still not holding my breath though.
With what it costs to produce hand made tires and still make a profit I've always been amazed that one of the companies tooled up to do it right in a modern and economical sense hasn't jumped in and took over...
Flexier.... I like that... Kinda like Flexible and sexy...![]()
I think mgh was referring to the other 10" wheels on the flyer ( Cleveland 40-101 etc). I am only speculating, But I seem to remember he was a Caravan guy, so that'd make sense. Depending on which flavor of those we are talking about they are used on the 'Van, Thrush, AirTractor etc... They are typically set up as triple pucks, or two banks of triple pucks... I can't imagine too many folks on this forum (except maybe the Beaver, Porter, possibly a Brousard driver?) willing to take the massive weight penalty these wheels carry in exchange for the extra braking that as you pointed out we really don't need... And in the case of a couple of those heavy's I mentioned, beta and reverse really makes their braking more than adequate already...
Not holding my breath on the Bushwheel killer, but really appreciate the insight, and hope you're right!
Take care, Rob
And don't forget that ABW has numerous STCs on their tires. Desser, so Fr has zero STCs on their tires.
That is huge.
