Desser introduces new tundra tire

Interesting... Pretty light load rating at 1600 lbs, but prob a good low budget choice for LSA. It says the tire "incorporates a tube." I wonder if that translates as has the tube built in? Or requires the use of a traditional tube?

Desser Tire & Rubber Company has just introduced its new line of ultimate backcountry Tundra tires. The first iteration in a series of new tire releases is the Aero Classic LSA/Experimental 8.50-6 4 ply rating smooth tire.

This tire has essentially the same dimensions as the TSO 850-6 tires that are in use currently, but is rated at 4 ply, instead of 6, and has a smooth tread profile, which is designed not to pick up pebbles and rocks, and damage the skin of the aircraft, and is highly deflected to absorb larger river rocks and gravel. This new tire incorporates a tube, and will be one of the lightest size tires in its class, and has a high speed rating of 120 MPH.

This tire will easily work on most LSA tailwheel aircraft, using either Cleveland, Grove, or Matco 6” wheels and brake packages, and features a generous 5/32”+ tread depth for extended wear. It will also offer tremendous value in a tire of this size, retailing at less than $200.00 per tire, and is manufactured here in the United States.

The follow on to this tire will be a fully sanctioned FAA/TSO 8.50-6 4pr tire, that will be for type certificated aircraft use. Larger, 27” and 31” Aero Classic tires are to follow in the near future, that can be utilized as Tubeless or Tube Type application. This tire will be available in mid-summer of 2014, directly from Desser Tire & Rubber Company, Inc.

The specifications for this Aero Classic LSA/Experimental tire are:

Size: 8.50-6, tube type
Ply: 4 ply
Load Rating: 1600 lbs. @ 20PSI
Weight: 10.2 lbs.
Weight with Tube: 12.4 lbs.
Bottoming Load: 4320 lbs.
Max Speed: 120MPH
Skid Depth: .160
Outside Dimension: 22.10max
Width: 8.85” max

For further information, please check the website at www.desser.com for future availability of these and other new production release tires.

Very cool. It will be interested to see the pricing and specs on the FAA/TSO'd tires when they come out. Might be a good option for a lot of people.

Zane,

My guess is 1600 pounds per tire. Just a guess though…..

Yeah, agreed. Still, that makes it appropriate for LSA, even by their stated intended use.

I would think per tire. Just like car, truck and other vehicle tires.

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

Unfortunately regardless of how the tube is oriented, the valve stem still exists the wheel. Outside of cushy rubber composition, valve stem location is the bushwheels huge advantage. Infact it's probably even more important than the rubber choice. I can't believe Desser missed that key piece. The way I see these is that they are simply a bald tire ....

In fact thinking this through, I see a handful of people trying to run these at pressures lower than the recommended to get into the rough and consequently shearing valve stems... some bozo will then try and sue Desser for poor design and then the whole line will get canned...

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

I wonder if they can be run tubeless? For the wheels/tires that are designed to be run tubeless (o-ring between wheel halves) what's special about the tire itself? Is the bead different?

The tubeless mountain bike tire systems can be run at very low pressures.

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

Since they list separate weights for the tire and "tire with tube" I'm guessing it's a standard separate tube. Still, will be interesting to see how they perform in the field at only $200/tire vs. over $1000 each for even the smallest bushwheels.

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

They need a cooler name than "Aero Classic."

Maybe "Bark Buster" or "Ditch Witch"

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

Interesting.....ABW has allegedly been working on a proprietary 8.50 x 6.00 tire for some time......I wonder if Desser bought that from the "new" ABW?

Could be a nice tire, but at that price point I see no advantage over the Goodyear 26, UNLESS Desser gets STCs for every airplane on the planet, like ABW has.

The tube is a deal killer....you're not going to run these low pressure.

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

I'm only planning to run 8.50x6's anyway. And will be operating mostly from grass and gravel runways, so I may well consider these. However, at only 2lbs each less than a Goodyear 6 ply, I'm not sure there's much advantage. Unless the tires is that much more flexible that even at higher pressures it's still presenting a bigger footprint on soft ground.

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

I wonder why they are even putting out tires that require air, with the new airless technology coming out. It seems like they might better spend there energy working on that...........

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

Desser's preorder page.

The preorder page says the first run will be experimental, while they work on the TSO from the FAA. Looks like a good fit for the Cessna 170, the 4 ply tires meet the Atlee Dodge FAA letter for 8.50x6 tires. Now it's just the definition of "original wheels" to be legal without field approval. At 10lbs each that's a good weight savings over the 26in Goodyears (23lbs each) and $500 dollars less. =D>

I'm in, I can't afford Bush wheels.

Re: Desser introduces new tundra tire

Write up in the June Kit Planes says they can be run tubeless. So with the right wheels the valve stem shearing isn't going to be an issue.

I'm curious about those future 27" and 31" tires. Very curious indeed! If they are STC'd for certified aircraft, things could get pretty exciting.

The "eight hundred pound gorilla" might be threaten. Good to see some competition in the fat tire market!

I personally wouldn't care about the STCs but I will be interested to learn more about the larger ones 27-31" when they are available.
