Thanks matt. I'm starting to think I may need two cameras. The reason I need a camera to fit in my pocket is to use when I work on wildfires. If it isn't handy to carry and get to I don't use it and miss a lot of good picture opportunities. I could easily use one of those you just now posted while flying. That's a great price. I could afford to get a second pocket size camera too.

This is the one in my earlier post.....came down another 5 bucks since I got mine. Easy to load on my computer as well. When the card gets full I save it and put in a new one. Makes nice vids as well.
I use my 7D for the heavy duty work......but I really like the A1200, it's with me all the time.

I think that A1200 is the way to go, if only for the price. At $80, if you drop it out the window, it's not going to break your heart. I believe this is the same camera recommended by Bighorn at the beginning of the thread.

Someday hope to meet up with you guys and have a beer or 2. My 206 came from Idaho, it was there for 37 years so it still acts like a bush plane.

I like a viewfinder for fast photos, too. Your eyes can stay at infinity focus, and your head automatically levels the shot and dampens motion.

The Cannon 1300 looks like it may be an upgrade of the 1200 with a little more zoom and pixels. Good luck.

Found this tread instead of starting a new one. I am looking for a good small camera... something in between my full size Canon 5D and pocket powershot (I'm a Canon follower)... So...I'm looking at the Canon SX500 which fits my price range perfectly $300-$400

If anyone has any comments on that particular camera or any suggestions on any other ones , fire it off

After this thread went dormant, I bought the Canon G12 I said I'd fallen in love with at Best Buy--found it on sale on Amazon, though still around $400. I have been totally satisfied with it. I nearly always let it do its thing automatically, although it has enough settings that I can work it almost manually. I like the screen, which allows the camera to be held above everyone's heads in a crowd, but I also like the view finder. It's not exactly pocket sized, but it's a lot more compact than an SLR.
