I've landed there but not in that direction - tough approach. But now I'd like to try :) A cockpit or similar view showing the whole approach would be cool.

Re: Dogleg gravel bar from the canyon

Had the Go Pro in the cockpit but it failed (has failed many times, it is annoying).
Fun approach from this side , more challenging, make sure the wind is calm or favors this approach.
Tried before one time and had to abort the landing because when I entered the canyon was real turbulent.

Re: Dogleg gravel bar from the canyon

Awesome video, thanks for the airplane porn !

How long is that gravel bar when that video was shot? 400 feet... 600 feet... 900 feet?

Assuming the airplane is light and being flown reasonably well, do you think a stock 145HP Cessna 172 can get back out of there, or is the takeoff only possible in a Cessna because of the 182's extra power?

Are stock 6.00 x 6 wheels OK for that surface, or would that be marginal?

Thanks , this gravel bar is 700ft at the most I think.

Jughead F15 flies his Cessna 170 in and out of it no problem.
Stock wheels in a 172 might be marginal though.

My 170 has the stock engine, but I do turn an 80/46 prop. Stock engine/prop/tires on a 172 would be getting to the edge of what would be prudent.

Re: Dogleg gravel bar from the canyon

OK, fair enough. Flying all the way up there to land on that gravel bar wasn't my intention, I just wanted to start "calibrating" what I can do with my stock 172 against what others are doing in somewhat similar airplanes like the 170B. Apparently I can do pretty well with mine on pavement, on and off within 400-500 feet, still using a cruise prop (doesn't exceed 2400 in climb). But that is on a paved runway or a good dirt road, not gravel, with easy straight approaches. Not many places to practice that kind of flying here in Los Angeles, our rivers are spray painted concrete :)
